  4. Feel the weight of your body resting down into the floor or chair, and breathe slowly into your belly.
  5. Hold for 10–15 minutes, then release the fingers and take a few breaths before you get up.

Traditional benefits

  • Traditionally used for a grounded, stable feeling when you are anxious, scattered or "up in your head"
  • Traditionally used to support strength and stamina, and in Ayurveda to help people who are underweight
  • Traditionally used for hair, nails and skin, which Ayurveda links with the earth element
  • Traditionally used to balance the root chakra (Muladhara) in chakra teaching
  • Traditionally used to increase the earth element in tattva theory

Keep in mind

  • Prithvi mudra does not replace medical care. Unexplained weight loss, hair loss or skin problems need a doctor.
  • Ayurveda traditionally advises moderation if you already feel heavy, sluggish or congested, since the mudra is said to increase earth.
  • Keep the touch light if your finger joints are stiff or painful.

Prithvi mudra, the gesture of earth, is a simple hand position: the tip of the ring finger meets the tip of the thumb while the other fingers stay straight. It is used to feel grounded and steady, and in Ayurveda to build strength. The diagram above is clearer than most prithvi mudra images, so check your hand against it.

Prithvi mudra meaning and pronunciation

Prithvi is Sanskrit for earth, and mudra means seal or gesture. So the prithvi mudra meaning is "gesture of earth". In Hindi it is पृथ्वी मुद्रा. How to pronounce prithvi mudra: "PRITH-vee MOO-drah".

How prithvi mudra works in tattva theory

Traditional mudra teaching links each finger with one of the five elements (tattvas): thumb with fire, index with air, middle with space, ring with earth and little finger with water. Touching a fingertip to the thumb tip is said to balance or increase that element. Prithvi mudra joins the earth finger with fire, so the tradition says it strengthens the earth element: bones, muscles, hair and nails, and a stable, patient mind.

That is how the tradition explains it. There is almost no clinical research on prithvi mudra. Any real effect probably comes from what you do while holding it: sitting still, breathing slowly and paying attention to the body's contact with the ground.

Prithvi mudra benefits (prithvi mudra ke labh)

Grounding, calm and positive thoughts

The most useful benefit is a feeling of being grounded. When you feel anxious or "all over the place", sitting in prithvi mudra and noticing your weight on the floor can bring you back into your body. Many people use it as a mudra for positive thoughts before a difficult day. Prithvi mudra spiritual benefits are linked with the root chakra (Muladhara), the chakra of safety and stability; see our guide to the chakras.

Prithvi mudra for hair and skin

Prithvi mudra benefits for hair and skin are among the most searched claims. Ayurveda links hair, nails and skin with the earth element, so mudra books recommend it for hair growth and a healthy glow. There is no evidence that a hand position grows hair. Hair loss can have many causes, such as thyroid problems, low iron or stress; see a doctor if it is sudden or patchy. If you want to try the mudra for hair anyway, hold it for 15 minutes a day alongside good food and sleep.

Prithvi mudra for weight gain (not weight loss)

Because it increases earth, the tradition uses prithvi mudra for weight gain in people who are thin or recovering from illness, not for weight loss. For weight loss the tradition points to surya mudra instead. Neither changes body weight on its own; food and movement do.

Prithvi mudra for eyes

Some books list prithvi mudra for eyes. There is no evidence for this; for tired eyes, try the exercises on our yoga for eye strain page and see an eye specialist for any change in vision.

How long to do prithvi mudra, and when

How long to do prithvi mudra? Start with 10 minutes and build to 15, once or twice a day. Tradition allows up to 45 minutes a day, split into sessions. Morning is a good time, as is any moment you feel scattered. Sit in Sukhasana or Vajrasana; you can also hold it standing in Mountain pose. The "Start a timer" button above opens our meditation timer.

Good partners are slow Ujjayi breathing and balancing poses such as Tree pose, which train the same steady attention.

Prithvi mudra vs surya mudra

Both use the ring finger, but in opposite ways:

Prithvi mudraSurya mudra
Ring fingerTip touches the thumb tipFolds under the thumb, thumb presses it
Earth elementIncreasesReduces (fire increases)
Traditional useGrounding, strength, weight gainMetabolism, feeling cold, weight loss
How longUp to 45 minutes a dayShorter sessions; used with more care

Choose prithvi when you feel light, anxious or depleted, and surya when you feel heavy, cold or sluggish.

Prithvi mudra side effects

No harmful effects are known. Ayurveda suggests moderation if you already feel heavy or congested. Prithvi mudra benefits and side effects are both mild, and it never replaces medical care.

Other mudras to try

There is no best mudra for overall health, but each has a traditional job. The benefits of prana mudra centre on energy, the benefits of vayu mudra on gas and stiffness. To learn how to do shunya mudra (middle finger folded) or how to do varun mudra (little fingertip to thumb), see all hand mudras and their benefits on our mudras page.

Prithvi mudra benefits in English are the same as prithvi mudra benefits in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati or Bengali.
