Yoga for hair growth is one of the most searched yoga topics, and it deserves an honest answer. No pose sends new hair to a bald spot. What yoga can do is lower stress, improve sleep and get you moving, and stress and poor sleep are linked to extra hair shedding. This page explains how yoga for hair fall may help, the poses and breathing in the session, a simple daily hair routine, and the medical causes of hair loss worth checking with a doctor.
Does yoga help with hair growth?
Can yoga help with hair growth? Indirectly, and only for some kinds of hair loss. The NHS lists stress, illness, weight loss, iron deficiency and cancer treatment among the causes of temporary hair loss, and notes that losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. When stress or a rough patch is the trigger, hair often sheds heavily a couple of months later and then slowly recovers once the cause settles. A calm daily practice may help that recovery by supporting sleep and easing stress.
Yoga cannot reverse male or female pattern baldness, which runs in families, and it cannot treat alopecia areata, thyroid disease or low iron. So does yoga make your hair grow faster? There is no evidence that it does. Our evidence level for this page is traditional: these poses come from yoga practice, not from hair studies.
Is yoga helpful for hair growth and thickness, then? Be wary of yoga for hair growth before and after photos: hair that sheds from stress often grows back on its own, with or without yoga. The real yoga benefits for hair growth are a calmer mind, better sleep and a daily habit that makes it easier to eat well. If you want to know how to reduce hair fall with yoga, think of it as one piece of a routine, not a hair exercise for hair growth that works by itself.
Check the causes of hair loss first
Before you ask how to regrow your hair, find out why it is falling. See a doctor or dermatologist if you notice:
- Sudden or heavy shedding, or hair coming out in clumps.
- Round bald patches, or patches with redness, scaling or pain.
- Tiredness, feeling cold, weight change or heavy periods, which can point to thyroid problems or low iron.
- Irregular periods, acne or extra facial hair in women, which can point to PCOS.
- Hair loss after starting a new medicine, after childbirth or after an illness.
Simple blood tests for iron (ferritin), thyroid and vitamin levels are often the most useful step. Treatments such as minoxidil exist, but the NHS notes that no treatment is 100% effective. If thyroid problems or PCOS are part of the picture, see our yoga for thyroid and yoga for PCOS pages.
Yoga poses for hair growth: the session explained
These yoga asanas for hair growth match the session cards above. Traditional teachers choose forward folds because the head is lower than the heart, which they believe brings blood to the scalp. That idea has not been tested for hair growth, so the real value is the calming, gentle movement. Hold each pose for 5–8 slow breaths.
1. Thunderbolt pose (Vajrasana)
Sit on your heels with a straight back. Vajrasana is a steady, quiet seat for the breathing practice and for balayam (see below). Put a cushion under your bottom if your knees or ankles complain.
2. Child's pose (Balasana)
Fold forward with your forehead on the mat. Balasana relaxes the neck, jaw and shoulders, where many people carry stress.
3. Hare pose (Shashankasana)
From kneeling, fold forward and rest the crown of the head lightly on the mat, hands holding the heels, or stretch the arms forward. Shashankasana is the traditional "hair pose" in many Indian yoga books. Keep most of your weight in your knees and hips, not your head, and skip it if you have neck problems, high blood pressure or glaucoma.
4. Standing forward bend (Uttanasana)
Stand, bend your knees and fold forward, letting the head hang heavy. Uttanasana releases the back of the legs and neck. Come up slowly to avoid dizziness.
5. Cobra pose (Bhujangasana)
Lie on your front and lift your chest a little. Bhujangasana opens a chest that rounds forward over screens, which helps you breathe more fully.
6. Bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana)
From lying on your back, lift your hips. Setu Bandhasana is a gentle inversion: the head is lower than the hips, without any weight on the neck.
7. Easy pose (Sukhasana)
Sit cross-legged for the breathing practice. Sukhasana finishes the session in stillness.
Many hair fall videos suggest headstand (Sirsasana) or shoulder stand. We do not recommend them for beginners. They can strain the neck and are not suitable with high blood pressure, glaucoma, neck problems or in pregnancy, and there is no proof that they help hair.
Breathing for stress: Anulom Vilom and Bhramari
If stress is behind your hair fall, the breathing may matter more than the poses. Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) is slow and steady; practise 5–10 minutes. Bhramari (humming bee breath) is a soft hum on the out-breath and is especially relaxing before bed. You can also hold Prithvi mudra, which is traditionally linked with strength and hair, while you breathe.
Balayam: rubbing nails yoga for hair growth
Balayam yoga for hair regrowth means rubbing the fingernails of both hands against each other for a few minutes a day. It is popular in India and easy to try, but there is no scientific evidence that it grows hair. If you enjoy it, it is harmless; just do not rely on it, and keep your thumbnails out of it if the skin is sore.
A daily hair routine that supports hair growth
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Morning | Guided session on this page (about 12 minutes) and a protein-rich breakfast |
| Daytime | Loose hairstyles; avoid tight ponytails and heavy heat styling |
| Evening | 5 minutes Bhramari or Anulom Vilom, then a 3-minute scalp massage |
| Night | Regular bedtime and 7–9 hours of sleep; see yoga for sleep |
How to massage hair for hair growth: use your fingertips, not nails, in small circles from the hairline to the back of the head for a few minutes. Hair massage for hair growth feels relaxing; evidence that it thickens hair is limited and early.
How to reduce hair fall: what really helps
How to stop hair fall, how to fix hair fall and how to encourage hair growth come down to the same basics. There is no single natural way to regrow hair, but these steps support hair growth and strengthening:
- Food. Enough protein, iron, zinc and calories. Crash diets are a common cause of shedding a few months later. Take vitamins for hair growth only if a test shows you are low.
- Gentle care. Avoid tight styles, harsh chemical treatments and very hot tools.
- Scalp health. For hair fall and dandruff, use an anti-dandruff shampoo and see a doctor if the scalp is red or scaly.
- Stress and sleep. This is where yoga for hair fall control and growth fits best.
- Patience. Hair grows slowly, so judge any change over three to six months.
Ayurvedic treatment for hair fall often uses oils and diet. Oiling can make hair feel softer; tell your doctor about any herbal tablets you take.
Yoga for hair growth for women, men and seniors
Yoga for hair growth female
For women, hair fall often follows childbirth, a crash diet, PCOS, thyroid problems or low iron from heavy periods. If you are asking how to stop hair fall for women, get those checked first; yoga for hair growth for women then supports stress and sleep.
Yoga for hair growth men
In men, a receding hairline or thinning crown is usually pattern baldness. Yoga for hair growth on a bald head will not bring hair back; a doctor can explain medical options. Yoga for hair growth for men is still worth doing for stress, fitness and sleep.
Yoga for hair growth for seniors
Hair naturally thins with age. Older adults should skip Uttanasana and Hare pose if they get dizzy or have high blood pressure, and sit on a chair for the breathing.

Frequently asked questions
Can yoga regrow hair?
No pose regrows hair on a bald patch. Yoga may help when stress or poor sleep is part of the cause of hair fall, by calming the body and improving sleep. Pattern baldness and medical causes need a doctor.
Which yoga is best for hair regrowth?
Gentle forward folds such as Hare pose (Shashankasana), Child's pose and Uttanasana are traditional choices, plus Anulom Vilom and Bhramari for stress. Their benefit for hair itself is not proven.
Does balayam (rubbing nails) really work?
There is no scientific evidence that rubbing your nails grows hair. It is harmless if you enjoy it, but do not rely on it.
Is headstand good for hair growth?
There is no proof it helps hair, and it is not safe for beginners or for people with neck problems, high blood pressure, glaucoma or in pregnancy. Gentle forward folds are a safer choice.
How long does yoga take to show results for hair fall?
Hair grows slowly. If stress was a trigger, shedding may settle over three to six months as your routine, sleep and diet improve. There is no reliable yoga before-and-after timeline.
What causes sudden hair loss?
Common causes include stress, illness, childbirth, crash dieting, low iron and thyroid problems. Round bald patches can be alopecia areata. See a doctor for sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss.
Does yoga for hair growth have side effects?
The poses are gentle, but forward folds can cause dizziness and are not suitable with high blood pressure or glaucoma. Stop if anything hurts.
Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
