Traditional benefits

  • Traditionally used to support digestion and a balanced metabolism (the "digestive fire", agni)
  • Traditionally used for feeling cold, heavy or sluggish, especially in the morning
  • Traditionally used as part of weight-management practice in Ayurveda
  • Traditionally used to reduce the earth element and increase fire in tattva theory

Keep in mind

  • Keep sessions short: 5–15 minutes, twice a day. Stop if you feel hot, thirsty, restless or dizzy.
  • Tradition advises avoiding it with fever, acidity, feeling overheated, in very hot weather, and if you are underweight or weak.
  • Surya mudra does not replace treatment for thyroid problems, diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Never stop prescribed medicine.
  • Press lightly if your finger joints are stiff or painful.

Surya mudra, the gesture of the sun, is a hand position in which the ring finger folds to the base of the thumb and the thumb holds it down. In Ayurveda it is the "heating" mudra, used for sluggish digestion, feeling cold and weight management. It is also called agni mudra, the fire gesture. The diagram above shows the fold more clearly than most surya mudra images and pictures.

What is surya mudra? Meaning and element theory

Surya is Sanskrit for sun, and mudra means seal or gesture. So the surya mudra meaning is "gesture of the sun". In Hindi it is सूर्य मुद्रा. The surya mudra spiritual meaning ties it to the sun as the source of warmth and energy, and to the fire element.

Traditional mudra teaching links each finger with an element: thumb with fire, index with air, middle with space, ring with earth and little finger with water. Folding a finger under the thumb is said to reduce its element. In surya mudra, fire presses down earth, so the tradition says it lowers heaviness and raises inner heat. This is why some books call it surya agni mudra and link its benefits to digestion and metabolism.

That is the traditional model. There is almost no clinical research on surya mudra, and none showing weight loss.

Surya mudra benefits

Surya mudra for balanced metabolism

The core traditional use is surya mudra for balanced metabolism: a steady appetite, regular digestion and a warm body. People use it on cold, heavy mornings, as a mudra to remove sleepiness. Surya mudra spiritual benefits are described as feeling brighter and more motivated.

Surya mudra for weight loss: what to expect

This is the most searched use, so be clear: a hand position does not burn fat. Online surya mudra weight loss reviews are personal stories, usually from people who also changed their diet and activity. If you want to try it, use the mudra for 10–15 minutes before breakfast as a calm start to a day of better habits. For real results, combine eating well with movement such as Surya Namaskar, and follow our yoga for weight loss and yoga for belly fat plans. Our yoga calories calculator shows what a session actually burns.

Thyroid, diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure

Mudra books list surya mudra for thyroid (especially an underactive thyroid), diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure. There is no evidence that it treats any of these. Keep taking your medicine and see yoga for thyroid and yoga for diabetes for approaches with research behind them. If you have high blood pressure, avoid pairing it with heating breath practices.

Claims that it is a mudra for skin problems or back pain have no evidence either. Surya mudra benefits for male and female practitioners are the same.

How long to do surya mudra

Tradition treats surya mudra as stronger than calming mudras such as gyan mudra, so keep it short. Start with 5 minutes and build to 10–15 minutes, twice a day. Many teachers suggest no more than about 30 minutes a day in total. How long to do surya mudra for weight loss? The same: 10–15 minutes, once or twice a day, as a habit, not a cure. The "Start a timer" button above opens our meditation timer.

The best time is early morning on an empty stomach, ideally in sunlight, sitting in Sukhasana or Vajrasana. It pairs with Surya Bhedana (right-nostril breathing), but skip that with high blood pressure, fever or anxiety. Can we do surya mudra while walking? You can hold it on a short walk, but seated practice with slow breathing is the traditional way.

Surya mudra side effects and precautions

Because it is described as heating, surya mudra side effects in the tradition are feeling too hot, thirsty, restless or irritable, or acidity after long sessions. Stop if any of these appear. Avoid it with fever, acid reflux, in very hot weather, or if you are underweight or run down. Surya mudra benefits and side effects are both modest, and it never replaces medical care.

Surya mudra vs prithvi mudra

Both use the ring finger. In prithvi mudra the ring fingertip touches the thumb tip, increasing earth for grounding and weight gain. In surya mudra the ring finger folds under the thumb, reducing earth. Choose surya when you feel heavy and cold, prithvi when you feel light, anxious or depleted.

Do not confuse surya mudra with the hand gesture of Surya Namaskar. The palms-together gesture at the start and end of the sun salutation is Anjali mudra. The Surya Namaskar mudra name in Hindi is Namaskar or Pranam mudra (प्रणाम मुद्रा).

There is no one mudra for all problems, and none is the best mudra for overall health on its own. As a mudra to reduce stress, gyan mudra suits most people. See all mudras in yoga and their benefits on our mudras page, including how to practice mudras safely.

Surya mudra benefits in English are the same as surya mudra benefits in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati or Hindi.
