Mudras for healthy weight gain
Hold a mudra while you sit for the breathing practice or a few minutes of quiet. Mudras are a traditional practice; research on them is limited.
Breathing practice
Avoid
Expecting weight gain from poses alone; you need enough food and protein. See a doctor for unexplained weight loss.
Traditional practice: Used in classical yoga therapy; few clinical trials so far.
Yoga for weight gain sounds odd, since most people use yoga to lose weight. But if you are underweight, thin however much you eat, or recovering from an illness, the right practice can help in three ways: it builds muscle through strength-holding poses, it can calm the stress and anxiety that reduce appetite, and it supports digestion and sleep. The weight itself still has to come from food. This page explains the plan above, what to eat, and when low weight needs a doctor.
If you are losing weight without trying, see a doctor. Unexplained weight loss can come from thyroid disease, diabetes, digestive problems, infections, depression or eating disorders, and needs a proper check before any exercise plan.
Can we gain weight by yoga? The honest answer
Does yoga increase weight? Not directly. Yoga burns calories, like any exercise, so on its own it tends to lower weight slightly. The evidence level for this page is traditional: there are no good trials of yoga for weight gain. What research does show is that regular hatha yoga can build strength. In a small 8-week study of untrained young adults, twice-weekly hatha yoga increased muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and fitness.
So how to gain weight by yoga? Eat a calorie surplus with enough protein, and use yoga (plus some resistance training if you can) so that the extra calories build muscle rather than only fat. That is how to properly gain weight: slowly, about a quarter to half a kilo (half a pound to a pound) a week.
Yoga to gain weight fast? Be realistic
Searches like "yoga for weight gain in 7 days" or "yoga to gain weight fast in 1 week" promise too much. Most quick gains in a week are water and food in the gut. Real muscle gain takes months. Yoga for weight gain before and after photos you see online usually reflect a change in diet and training over a long time, not a few poses.
The best yoga poses for weight gain, explained
These yoga asanas for weight gain focus on the big muscles of the legs, hips and back, which respond best to strength work. Hold each pose until your muscles feel warm and working but not shaking wildly.
Mountain and chair pose
Mountain pose (Tadasana) sets your posture: feet grounded, spine long. Chair pose (Utkatasana) is a yoga squat that loads the thighs and buttocks. Sit back as if onto a chair, knees behind the toes. To make it harder, hold longer or lower a little more; this is the closest yoga comes to a leg workout.
Warrior I and Warrior II
Warrior I and Warrior II build strength in the front leg and endurance in the shoulders. Bend the front knee over the ankle and keep the back leg strong. Hold both sides evenly.
Thunderbolt pose
Vajrasana is a kneeling seat traditionally used after meals. It is a comfortable way to sit and breathe after eating; if you feel full quickly or bloated, see yoga for digestion. Put a cushion between heels and buttocks if the knees complain.
Cobra and bridge
Cobra pose strengthens the back muscles that hold you upright. Bridge pose works the buttocks and hamstrings: lift and lower eight to ten times, then hold once. Repetitions like this work the muscles more than a single hold.
Savasana
Savasana closes the session. Muscles grow during rest and sleep, not during the workout, so relaxation matters here too.
For more challenge, add plank and locust from the extra poses list, and Surya Namaskar rounds for full-body work.
What to eat to gain weight (wajan badhane ke liye kya khaye)
Food is the main part of any weight gain plan. Simple rules that work:
- Eat more often. Three meals plus two or three snacks is easier than forcing huge plates.
- Add protein to every meal: eggs, milk, curd or yoghurt, paneer, cheese, dal, beans, chickpeas, tofu, fish or chicken.
- Use energy-dense foods: nuts and nut butters, seeds, dried fruit, ghee or olive oil on vegetables, whole milk, bananas, potatoes and rice.
- Drink calories: a milk and banana smoothie with oats and peanut butter adds a lot without feeling heavy.
- Do not fill up on water just before meals, and eat within an hour or two after exercise.
Yoga for weight gain for vegetarians
Vegetarians can gain healthy weight well with dairy, pulses, soy, nuts and whole grains. Combine a grain with a pulse (rice and dal, roti and chana) to get complete protein. If you are vegan, pay attention to vitamin B12 and ask a dietitian for help.
Avoid "weight gain" shortcuts such as steroid-containing powders or unlabelled supplements. Junk food adds weight, but mostly as fat; aim for real food first.
Yoga for weight gain for women and men
Yoga for weight gain for women and girls
Weight gain yoga for female beginners can follow the same plan at home. Low weight in women can cause missed periods and weaker bones, so if your periods have stopped, see a doctor. Yoga for muscle gain for female bodies works well with chair pose, warriors, bridge and plank, especially if you slowly hold them longer or add light dumbbells.
Yoga for weight gain for male adults
How to gain weight for men is mostly the same: a food surplus, protein and progressive strength work. Yoga to gain weight for men, and yoga for weight gain for adults in general, is best combined with bodyweight exercises (push-ups, squats) or gym training two or three times a week; yoga then adds mobility and recovery.
For seniors
Yoga for weight gain for seniors should be gentle: chair pose against a wall, supported warriors and bridge. Older adults who lose weight often lose muscle too, so protein and strength work are important. Ask your doctor if you are frail or have fallen.
Stress, sleep and appetite: yoga benefits for weight gain
Many thin people eat little when stressed or anxious. Slow breathing can help here. Anulom Vilom gives your mind a steady rhythm; Bhramari calms you before meals or before bed. Five minutes is enough. For a calmer mind overall see yoga for stress. The suggested Prithvi mudra is a traditional hand gesture linked with "earth" and stability; it is a focus aid, not a way to add weight.

Keep cardio moderate: long runs or very long hot yoga classes burn the calories you are trying to keep. A yoga with weights workout, such as holding light dumbbells in chair pose or warriors, is a simple way to add load at home, and yoga to gain weight fast for skinny people works best this way: heavier, not longer. Weigh yourself once a week at the same time; if nothing changes in three weeks, add about 300 calories a day.
Yoga for weight gain side effects and cautions
Yoga itself is low risk. The main problem is burning more than you eat. Other points: do not practise on a completely empty stomach if you feel faint; start slowly after illness; and see a doctor for dizziness, a racing heart or low blood pressure. Claims about yoga for gaining weight and height together are not true for adults: once growth plates close, height does not increase, though better posture can make you stand taller.
Yoga for weight gain and glowing skin
Is yoga for weight gain and glowing skin a real combination? Better sleep, more movement and a fuller diet can make skin look healthier, but no pose changes skin directly.
Some people with a slow metabolism ask about yoga for weight loss or menopause weight gain instead; if that is you, the question becomes: is yoga good for weight loss, and does yoga help you lose weight? Yes, modestly, especially faster styles; see yoga for weight loss and yoga for menopause.
Practise with the 3D guide
The guided session at the top of this page plays all eight poses with a voice in 28 languages. Rather than yoga for weight gain with pictures, you see a 3D figure you can rotate, and the Body guide shows which muscles each pose works. Choose longer holds as you get stronger.
Below is a short summary of yoga for weight gain in Hindi, including vajan badhane ke liye kya khaye (what to eat).

Frequently asked questions
Can yoga help you gain weight?
Yoga does not add weight by itself, because it burns calories. It helps when you also eat more: strength-holding poses build muscle, and calming practice may improve appetite and sleep.
What are the best yoga poses for weight gain?
Chair pose, Warrior I and II, bridge, cobra, plank and locust build muscle. Vajrasana after meals and Savasana for recovery complete the plan.
How long does it take to gain weight with yoga?
A healthy rate is about a quarter to half a kilo a week with a calorie surplus. Visible muscle change usually takes two to three months of regular practice and good food.
Can I gain weight in 7 days with yoga?
Not in a lasting way. A few days of big meals can raise the scale through water and food, but real muscle and healthy weight take months.
Is yoga good for weight gain for females?
Yes, combined with enough food and protein. Chair pose, warriors, bridge and plank build strength. If your periods have stopped because of low weight, see a doctor.
What should I eat to gain weight?
Eat five or six times a day and include protein each time: milk, curd, paneer, eggs, dal, beans, nuts, fish or chicken. Add energy-dense foods like nut butter, ghee, bananas and dried fruit.
Does yoga increase or decrease weight?
On its own yoga tends to lower weight slightly. With extra food and strength work, it helps you gain muscle weight instead of fat.
Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
