How to do Revolved Chair Pose step by step
- Stand with your feet together, or hip-width apart if that is steadier. Bend your knees and sit back into Chair Pose, weight in your heels.
- Bring your palms together at the centre of your chest.
- Breathe in and lengthen your spine. Breathing out, turn your chest to the left and hook your right elbow outside your left knee.
- Keep your knees level: press your left knee gently into your right arm so it does not slide forward. Keep your hips facing the front of the mat.
- Press your palms together to turn your chest a little more, and look up or to the left if your neck is comfortable.
- Hold for 20–30 seconds (3–5 breaths), lengthening on each inhale and turning a little on each exhale.
- Breathe in, come back to the centre in Chair Pose, then straighten your legs. Repeat on the right side.
Where you feel Revolved Chair Pose: what it stretches and strengthens
Keep your knees level and twist from your ribs, not your hips. In the 3D guide, turn on Body guide: areas that stretch glow green and areas that work glow saffron.

Revolved chair pose (Parivrtta Utkatasana) is Chair Pose with a twist. You sit back as if onto an invisible chair, bring your palms together and turn your chest to one side, hooking the opposite elbow outside your knee. It strengthens the legs and core while it wrings out the upper back, which is why it appears in most power and vinyasa classes.
Revolved chair pose Sanskrit name and meaning
In Sanskrit, parivrtta means "revolved" or "turned around", utkata means "fierce" or "powerful" and asana means "pose". So Parivrtta Utkatasana is literally "revolved fierce pose". In English yoga classes it is also called twisted chair pose or chair pose with twist.
What is the chair pose it builds on?
Chair pose in yoga (Utkatasana) is a standing squat: knees bent, hips back, arms raised. Learn how to do Chair Pose first, then add the twist.
How to do revolved chair pose: key cues
The steps above follow the 3D figure, which twists to the left first. These cues fix the common problems:
- Twist from the ribs, not the hips. Your hips stay facing forward. The rotation happens in the upper back.
- Keep your knees level. When you twist left, the right knee tends to slide forward. Press the left knee into your right arm to even them out.
- Length before turn. Lift the chest on the inhale and turn on the exhale. A rounded spine cannot rotate well.
- Weight in the heels. You should be able to lift your toes.
Revolved chair pose benefits
The twisted chair pose benefits come from doing two things at once. The legs work hard in the squat, building strength in the quadriceps and glutes, while the abdominal muscles hold you steady and the obliques turn you. The upper back gets a rotational stretch that desk workers need.
Twists are often said to "detox" the organs; there is no good evidence for that. What is true is that the gentle squeeze and release of the belly can feel good for digestion, and that regular twisting keeps the spine mobile. For a fuller routine, see yoga for digestion.
What muscles does chair pose work?
| Worked | Stretched |
|---|---|
| Quadriceps and glutes (holding the squat) | Upper back and the muscles between the shoulder blades |
| Abdominals and obliques (turning and stabilising) | Obliques on the side you turn away from |
| Ankles and calves (balance) | Outer shoulder of the hooked arm |
Is chair pose good for knees?
For most people, yes, when done with the knees tracking over the toes and the weight in the heels. It strengthens the thigh muscles that support the knee. If you have knee pain, bend less, keep the stance hip-width and hold for a shorter time. If it hurts inside the knee, come out. Our yoga for knee pain plan has gentler options.
Revolved chair pose modifications and variations
Like most modifications for yoga poses, these make the shape fit your body, not the other way round.
- Hand on the thigh: instead of hooking the elbow, place your right hand on your left thigh and your left hand on your lower back.
- Feet hip-width: a wider base makes balance easier.
- Open arms: for experienced students, reach the bottom hand to the floor outside the foot and the top arm to the ceiling.
- Chair yoga seated twist: sit sideways on a chair and turn toward the backrest. This seated spinal twist in a chair gives the rotation without the squat, one of the most useful yoga poses sitting in a chair for beginners and seniors.
- Chair for support: hold the back of a chair with one hand while you twist. It turns the pose into one of the chair yoga standing poses.
Other chair pose variations in yoga include one legged chair pose, also called figure four chair pose, where one ankle crosses the opposite knee.
Revolved chair vs other twisting poses in yoga
- Revolved triangle pose (Sanskrit: Parivrtta Trikonasana): revolved triangle twists over a straight front leg, adding a strong hamstring stretch. Revolved triangle pose benefits lean more toward flexibility; revolved chair toward strength.
- Revolved side angle pose: this revolved side angle yoga pose, the revolved extended side angle pose, twists over a lunge. It is a deeper hip opener.
- Seated twist yoga pose: a seated spinal twist pose on the floor is an easy twist yoga pose for days when your legs are tired.
A short revolved chair pose sequence
Warm up with a few rounds of Sun Salutation. Sit into Chair Pose, twist left, return to centre, twist right. Step back into a revolved low lunge, then rest in a forward fold. Experienced students can later add revolved half moon pose. Practise with voice in our guided sessions.
Chair yoga for back pain: is the seated twist enough?
The standing version is fairly strong, so it is not a first choice for an aching back. The seated chair twist is gentler and may ease stiffness in the upper and middle back; the benefits of chair yoga are that you stay supported and steady. For chair yoga for lower back pain relief, keep the turn small and add the gentle poses in our yoga for back pain plan. With sciatica or a disc problem, follow your physiotherapist’s advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is revolved chair pose good for?
It strengthens the thighs, glutes and core while it stretches and mobilises the upper back and the sides of the waist. It also builds balance and focus.
Should my knees be even in revolved chair pose?
Yes. When you twist, one knee usually slides forward. Press the lower knee gently into your arm so both knees stay level.
Can beginners do twisted chair pose?
Yes, with a modification: feet hip-width, knees only slightly bent and one hand on the opposite thigh instead of hooking the elbow.
Is revolved chair pose safe in pregnancy?
Deep closed twists that compress the belly are not recommended in pregnancy. Choose an open, gentle shoulder turn or skip it, and ask your midwife or doctor.
How long should I hold revolved chair pose?
About 20–30 seconds, or 3–5 breaths, on each side. Come out if your breath becomes strained.
What is the difference between revolved chair and revolved triangle?
Revolved chair twists over bent knees and builds leg strength. Revolved triangle twists over a straight front leg and stretches the hamstrings.
