    Mudras for belly fat

Hold a mudra while you sit for the breathing practice or a few minutes of quiet. Mudras are a traditional practice; research on them is limited.

    Avoid

Strong core work right after a C-section or with a hernia until your doctor clears it.

Emerging evidence: Small or early trials look promising.

Yoga for belly fat is one of the most searched yoga topics, and one of the most misunderstood. No exercise, yoga or otherwise, burns fat from the area you work. What yoga can do is strengthen the deep core muscles, improve your posture so your belly sits flatter, lower the stress that drives late-night snacking, and add regular movement to your week. Together with changes in what you eat, that is how yoga for belly fat loss really works.

Can yoga reduce belly fat? How it really works

There are two kinds of belly fat. Subcutaneous fat sits under the skin; you can pinch it. Visceral fat lies deeper, around the organs, and is the kind most linked to type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Both shrink when your body uses more energy than it takes in, and both shrink from everywhere at once, not just from the muscles you exercise.

That is why a hundred crunches a day will not flatten a belly on their own. Yoga helps in other ways:

    • Core strength and posture: Plank, Side Plank and Boat train the deep abdominal wall. A stronger core and an upright spine make the belly look and feel flatter even before any fat is lost.
    • Stress and sleep: long-term stress and poor sleep increase appetite, especially for sweet and fatty foods. Slow breathing and relaxation help you break that pattern.
    • Mindful eating: regular practice makes many people more aware of real hunger and fullness.
    • Movement: strong, flowing sessions add to the energy you use each week.

Does yoga help lose belly fat? What the research says

The evidence is emerging: a few trials measured the waist or belly fat directly.

    • A small trial of 24 inactive adults found that six weeks of abdominal exercises, five days a week, made the stomach muscles stronger but did not reduce belly fat or waist size. Spot reduction does not work.
    • In a one-year trial of 182 adults with metabolic syndrome, three hour-long yoga sessions a week reduced average waist size from 89.9 cm to 86.8 cm, while the control group's waist grew slightly.
    • A 16-week trial in 16 obese postmenopausal women found that the eight women in the yoga group lost visceral fat and waist size, while the comparison group did no exercise. It was very small, so treat it as promising, not proven.
    • A 2016 meta-analysis of 30 trials found no overall effect of yoga on waist size, while a 2022 review of people with overweight or obesity found reductions when sessions were long, frequent and combined with diet changes.

So, does yoga reduce belly fat? It can help, slowly, as part of a bigger plan. Short, occasional sessions alone rarely change the waistline, and the best way of losing belly fat with yoga is to pair it with diet and walking.

Yoga poses for belly fat and core strength, one by one

These seven yoga poses make up the short guided session: think of them as asanas and stomach exercises that help reduce belly fat by building muscle and supporting fat loss, while walking and diet do most of the burning. Hold each for a few steady breaths and never hold your breath to stay in a pose.

    1. Boat Pose: front of the core

Boat Pose (Naukasana) works the abdominal muscles and hip flexors. Beginners keep the knees bent and hold the backs of the thighs. Lean back only as far as your lower back stays long.

    2. Plank Pose: the whole core

Plank (Phalakasana) trains the deep core that wraps your middle like a belt. Drop your knees, or press your hands into a wall or table. Keep your hips level with your shoulders.

    3. Side Plank: waist and sides

Side Plank (Vasisthasana) works the side muscles, the obliques. It is the most useful yoga pose here for belly and side fat areas, although it strengthens rather than burns. Keep the lower knee on the mat to start.

    4. Bow Pose: back and stretch

Bow Pose (Dhanurasana) strengthens the back and stretches the front of the body, balancing all the forward-curling core work. Lift one leg at a time if the full pose is hard. Skip it with back pain, a hernia or during pregnancy.

    5. Cobra Pose: gentle backbend

Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) strengthens the spine muscles that hold you upright, so your belly does not slump forward. Keep your elbows bent and lift gently.

    6. Raised Leg Pose: lower abdominals

Raised Leg Pose (Uttanpadasana) works the lower abdominal muscles. Raising both straight legs can strain the lower back, so bend your knees, lift one leg at a time, and slide your hands under your hips for support.

    7. Wind-Relieving Pose: bloating

Wind-Relieving Pose (Pavanamuktasana) hugs the knees to the belly. It does not burn fat, but it is traditionally used to ease gas, and a lot of what feels like belly fat on some days is bloating. It is a relaxing way to finish.

    Breathing practice

Kapalbhati uses short, sharp exhales pushed by the abdominal muscles, so it trains them, but it does not burn belly fat. Do not practise it if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, epilepsy, a hernia, recent abdominal surgery, or if you are pregnant or recently gave birth. Stop if you feel dizzy.

Yoga for belly fat for women, men, beginners and seniors

    Women

For women, yoga to reduce belly fat at home follows the same plan; there is no special female pose. Around menopause, fat tends to move towards the belly, so strength work, sleep and stress care matter more. Our yoga for menopause page covers that stage.

    After a C-section or delivery

After childbirth, the two sides of the abdominal wall can stay apart (diastasis recti). Crunch-type moves such as Boat and Raised Leg can make this worse. Wait until your doctor clears you, start with breathing and gentle postnatal yoga, and ask a women's health physiotherapist to check your tummy muscles first. After a C-section, recovery usually takes longer.

    Men

Men tend to store more visceral fat, the deeper and riskier kind. The same plan works, and walking plus diet changes are the biggest levers.

    Beginners and seniors

For beginners, yoga for weight loss and belly fat starts with the easier version of each pose and a few sessions a week, then builds up. Chair yoga to reduce belly fat suits seniors, including senior men, and beginners who find the floor hard: seated knee lifts, seated twists and sitting tall with the belly gently drawn in all work the core. See chair yoga.

Lower belly fat, side fat, thighs and hips

People often ask about yoga for lower belly fat, stomach or tummy fat, love handles, or belly fat and thighs. The answer is the same: fat leaves the body in an order set by your genes and hormones, not by the poses you choose. Poses can firm the muscles underneath, which changes the shape a little. Overall fat loss changes it a lot.

How can you quickly lose unwanted belly fat with yoga, or reduce it in 7 days or 1 week? You cannot lose meaningful fat that quickly. A flatter belly within days usually means less bloating. Real change takes months of steady habits.

What to avoid and when to see a doctor

    • Strong core work with a hernia, diastasis recti or after abdominal surgery, until a doctor clears you
    • Kapalbhati and breath holding with high blood pressure or heart disease
    • Lying on your belly or strong core work in pregnancy; see prenatal yoga instead
    • Pulling on your neck in Boat Pose or Raised Leg Pose

See a doctor if your belly grows while the rest of you gets thinner, you have bloating that does not go away, belly pain, a bulge that appears when you cough or strain, a change in bowel habits, or blood in your stool. Persistent new bloating needs checking, especially after age 50.

Yoga for belly fat in Hindi: pet kam karne ka yoga aur tarika

Kabj ko dur karne ke liye yoga also matters here: gas and constipation can make the belly look bigger; see yoga for constipation for help with that.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can yoga reduce belly fat?

Only as part of overall fat loss. Yoga strengthens the core and helps with stress and eating habits, and trials that combined long, regular sessions with diet saw smaller waists. No pose removes fat from the belly alone.

Which yoga is best for belly fat?

Poses that work the whole core, such as Plank, Side Plank and Boat, plus active sequences like Surya Namaskar that use more energy. Pair them with walking and better eating.

How long does it take to reduce belly fat with yoga?

Expect months, not days. In one trial, waist size fell over a year of three sessions a week. Measure your waist monthly to see progress.

Is Kapalbhati good for belly fat?

Kapalbhati trains the abdominal muscles but does not burn meaningful fat. It is not safe with high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, pregnancy or soon after surgery.

Can I do yoga for belly fat after a C-section?

Only after your doctor clears you. Start with breathing and gentle core activation, get checked for tummy muscle separation, and avoid Boat, Raised Leg and full Plank until you are ready.

Does yoga for belly fat have side effects?

Sore abdominal muscles are normal at first. Neck or lower back strain usually means the pose is too hard, so use the bent-knee versions. Stop and see a doctor if you notice a bulge in your belly when you strain.

Is chair yoga good for belly fat for seniors?

Chair yoga strengthens the core safely and keeps you active, which helps, especially with walking and diet changes. It will not target belly fat on its own.

Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
