Yoga for gallstones: gentle movement, honest limits and when to get help

No pose, breath or cleanse can dissolve or flush out gallstones. What regular, gentle activity can do is support a healthy weight and digestion, which is linked to a lower risk of gallstone trouble. This page shows how, safely.

    Avoid

Relying on yoga to dissolve or flush out stones — it cannot, and crash diets can make stones worse. Go to hospital for severe upper-right belly pain lasting hours, fever, yellow eyes or skin, or dark urine.

Traditional practice: Used in classical yoga therapy; few clinical trials so far.

Yoga for gallstones needs one honest sentence first: yoga cannot dissolve, break up or flush out gallstones, and no pose "removes" them. What yoga can do is keep you gently active, support a healthy weight and help you manage stress while you and your doctor decide what the stones need. Large studies link regular physical activity with a lower chance of gallstones causing trouble, so movement is worth it, just not as a cure.

    Gallstones in plain English

Gallstones (in Hindi, "pittashay ki pathri"; pite ki pathri in English is simply gallbladder stones) are small, hard lumps that form in the gallbladder, a small pouch under the liver that stores bile. The NHS notes that most people with gallstones have no symptoms. Trouble starts when a stone blocks a bile duct: that causes sudden, severe pain in the upper middle or upper right of the belly, often after a fatty meal, lasting from 30 minutes to several hours, sometimes with nausea or vomiting. This is called biliary colic.

You are more likely to get gallstones if you are over 40, a woman, living with obesity, eat a diet high in fat and low in fibre, have lost weight quickly, or have diabetes or Crohn's disease. That is why gallstones in women are so common, and why weight and activity matter.

Is yoga good for gallstones? What the evidence says

The evidence level for this page is traditional. There are no trials of yoga poses for gallstones. The evidence is about physical activity in general:

    • A 2017 meta-analysis of 16 studies (about 260,000 people) found that the most active people had a lower risk of gallstone disease than the least active, in both men and women.
    • A long US study of 60,290 women found that the most active fifth had about a 30% lower risk of needing gallbladder removal than the least active, and that long hours of sitting raised the risk.

These studies show a link, not proof that exercise prevents stones, and none show that exercise shrinks stones you already have. Does exercise help with gallstones? It may help prevent new trouble; it will not fix existing stones.

Yoga asanas for gallstones, one by one

These yoga moves for gallstones are the poses in your guided session above: gentle, mostly standing and lying poses that keep you moving without pressure on a sore upper belly. Practise on an empty stomach and never during a pain attack.

    Cat and cow (Marjaryasana–Bitilasana)

On hands and knees, round the back on the out-breath in cat pose and lift the chest on the in-breath in cow pose. Gentle spine movement to start.

    Mountain pose (Tadasana)

Stand tall in Tadasana and take a few full breaths into the sides of your ribs, where the liver and gallbladder sit.

    Triangle pose (Trikonasana)

With feet wide, reach one hand down to the shin or a block and the other up in Trikonasana. It lengthens the side body, including the right side under the ribs. Keep the chest open rather than collapsing forward.

    Bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana)

Lift the hips from lying on your back in Setu Bandhasana. It works the legs and buttocks and gently opens the front of the body.

    Lying twist (Supta Matsyendrasana)

Let bent knees fall to one side in Supta Matsyendrasana. Keep it soft; a pillow under the knees makes it easier. Skip it if you have any right-sided discomfort that day.

    Cobra pose (Bhujangasana) and Savasana

Lift the chest a little from lying on your front in Bhujangasana. If lying on your belly presses on a tender spot, skip it. End with 5 minutes in Savasana.

Add 15–20 minutes of brisk walking most days. Walking does more for weight and fitness than any single pose. The best yoga exercise for gallstones is simply the practice you will keep up, and the same plan suits other gallbladder problems and issues on pain-free days.

Breathing and mudras in yoga for gallstones

Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) for 5 minutes a day is a calm, safe breathing practice. There is no specific yoga mudra for gallstones with any evidence behind it. Avoid strong belly-pumping practices such as Kapalbhati and Agnisar Kriya if your upper belly is tender or you have had recent pain.

Gallbladder stone pain relief: what helps with gallstones, and what does not

Yoga for gallstones pain is not the answer during an attack, and there is no quick relief for gallstone pain that is safe to rely on at home. If pain comes, stop exercising, sit or lie in whatever position feels easiest, and follow your doctor's plan. To relieve gallstone pain while waiting for treatment, the NHS says you may take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, be offered stronger painkillers for severe pain, avoid foods that trigger symptoms, and be advised to eat a low-fat diet. At home remedies for gallstones pain are limited: warmth (a hot-water bottle) and slow breathing may ease the pain of gallstones a little, but they cannot calm down or relieve gallstones themselves. Pain relief from gallstones that keeps returning usually means you need treatment, not more home care.

Get an urgent appointment if belly pain lasts longer than 30 minutes. Call emergency services or go to hospital if you have sudden, severe belly pain, pain spreading to your back with vomiting, a high temperature or shivering, or yellow skin or yellow whites of the eyes. These can mean infection of the gallbladder, pancreatitis or a blocked bile duct.

What are the 3 treatments for gallstones?

Stone in gallbladder treatment (often written gall bladder stones treatment) depends on whether the stones cause symptoms:

    1. Watch and wait. Treatment for asymptomatic gallstones is usually none: if stones are found by chance and cause no symptoms, doctors often leave them alone and check again later.
    2. Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy). The main treatment for stones that cause symptoms. Most people live normally without a gallbladder.
    3. ERCP. If a stone is stuck in the common bile duct, a camera tube passed through the mouth can widen the duct opening and clear the stone.

Rarely, for small stones, doctors may try tablets that slowly dissolve them, but these work only for some stones and they often come back. So how do you dissolve gallbladder stones naturally? You cannot, reliably. And how to get rid of gallstones fast? Not at home. There is no way to treat gallbladder stones naturally, reduce gallbladder stones with diet or cure gallbladder stones with yoga; the only reliable way to get rid of gallbladder stones or remove them, fast or slow, is medical treatment. For stones that cause pain, the best remedy for gallstones is usually surgery.

Flushes, cleanses and "natural remedies to dissolve gallstones"

Online, you will find many natural remedies for gallstones: olive oil and lemon "flushes", apple juice cleanses, herbal teas. There is no good evidence that any home remedy for gallbladder stones, natural treatment for gallstones or holistic treatment for gallstones can dissolve or pass them. The soft green lumps people see after an oil flush are usually formed from the oil itself, not real stones. Some cleanses can even trigger an attack by making the gallbladder squeeze hard against a stone. The same caution applies to any ayurvedic treatment for gallstones, ayurvedic medicine for a gallbladder stone or cure for gallstones in Ayurveda sold as a way to remove stones: ask your doctor before taking it, and do not delay a scan or surgery because of it.

How to prevent gallbladder stones: where yoga for gallstones helps most

You cannot heal or fix gallstones with lifestyle alone, but these habits may help stop gallstones forming and help you manage gallstones you already have:

    • Stay active. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week: walking plus yoga fits well. Break up long hours of sitting.
    • Keep a healthy weight, and lose weight slowly. Crash diets, very low-calorie diets and rapid weight loss make stones more likely.
    • Do not skip meals for long periods; regular meals keep bile moving.
    • Eat more fibre and less saturated fat: vegetables, fruit, whole grains and pulses.

Gallstones what to avoid, in short: crash diets, long fasting, very fatty meals if they trigger pain, and relying on flushes. For more on eating and movement, see our yoga for weight loss and yoga for digestion pages.

Yoga for gallbladder stones in women

Women are more likely to get gallstones, especially around pregnancy. Gallstones symptoms in women are the same as in men, and so is the treatment; there is no special natural treatment for gallstones in women, and the yoga plan is the same. In pregnancy, skip poses lying on the belly and deep twists and use our prenatal guidance instead; any upper-right belly pain in pregnancy needs a doctor.

Can I exercise with gallstones? Yoga for gallstones after surgery

Yes, if you have no pain. Walking, cycling, swimming and gentle yoga are fine. Stop and rest during an attack. After gallbladder surgery, follow your surgeon's advice; most people start walking the same day or next day and avoid heavy lifting and strong core work for some weeks. Our yoga after surgery page has a gentle return plan. Gallstones and kidney stones are different conditions; see yoga for kidney stones for those.
