Mudras for premature grey hair
Hold a mudra while you sit for the breathing practice or a few minutes of quiet. Mudras are a traditional practice; research on them is limited.
Breathing practice
Avoid
Believing claims that yoga or nail rubbing (Balayam) turns grey hair black — there is no proof. Early greying with tiredness can mean low B12 or a thyroid problem, so get a blood test.
Traditional practice: Used in classical yoga therapy; few clinical trials so far.
Yoga for grey hair is one of the most searched hair topics, and it deserves an honest answer: yoga does not reverse genetic greying, and no pose, mudra or nail-rubbing exercise has been shown to turn grey hair black. What yoga may do is help you manage stress, which research now links to greying, and support the healthy habits that keep the hair you have in good condition. If your hair is greying early, the most useful step is not a pose but a blood test.
Why hair turns grey
Hair colour comes from pigment cells (melanocytes) at the root of each hair. With age, these cells and the stem cells that replace them run down, and new hairs grow in without pigment. Grey or white hair is simply hair with little or no pigment. Doctors call greying "premature" when it starts well before the usual age for your family and ethnic background, for example in the teens or early twenties.
The main causes and links, from strongest to weakest:
- Genes. Family history is the strongest factor. In a survey of 6,390 young Korean men, a family history of early greying was the factor most strongly linked to it. In an Indian clinic study, 90% of people with early greying had a parent or sibling with it too.
- Low vitamin B12 and thyroid problems. The same Indian study linked early greying with low B12 and an underactive thyroid, and another found lower B12, folate and biotin in people with early greying than in those without.
- Smoking and obesity were also linked to early greying in the Korean survey.
- Stress. In mice, acute stress triggers nerves that permanently use up the pigment stem cells. In people, a 2021 study found some grey hairs regained colour during calmer periods of life.
Can yoga reverse grey hair? What the research says
The evidence level for this page is traditional. There are no studies of yoga for grey hair reversal or for preventing grey hair. Here is what is known:
- A 2020 study in Nature showed that in mice, stress activates nerves that release noradrenaline into the hair root and permanently use up pigment stem cells, causing grey hair.
- A 2021 study mapped colour along single human hairs and found that some grey hairs naturally regained colour, sometimes in step with less stress. The authors suggest this happens only in hairs close to a "threshold", which may explain why it is rare and temporary.
- A review of premature greying calls it usually progressive and permanent, with few proven treatments.
So, yoga for turning grey hair to black is not realistic, and there are no yoga asanas for reversing grey hair. Can yoga stop premature greying of hair that runs in your family? No. If stress is part of your story, calmer days may slow new greying a little, and a very small number of recently greyed hairs might regain colour. That is the honest ceiling: the real yoga for grey hair benefits are less stress and better sleep. Be wary of glowing yoga for grey hair reviews and "before and after" photos online: they are not studies, and dye, lighting and natural variation explain most of them.
Best yoga for grey hair: the asanas, one by one
These are the poses in your guided session above. Traditionally, forward bends are said to "bring blood to the scalp"; there is no proof this changes hair colour, so think of them as calming poses for a stressed nervous system.
Thunderbolt pose (Vajrasana)
Kneel and sit back on the heels in Vajrasana, spine tall. A steady seat for the breathing below. A cushion between heels and buttocks helps stiff knees.
Child's pose (Balasana) and Hare pose (Shashankasana)
Fold forward over the knees with the forehead down in Balasana, then move to Shashankasana, sitting on the heels with the arms stretched forward. Both let the head rest lower than the hips and quiet the breath. Breathe slowly into the back.
Easy pose (Sukhasana)
Sit cross-legged in Sukhasana for Bhramari and Anulom Vilom.
Cat and cow (Marjaryasana–Bitilasana)
Move the spine slowly with the breath in cat pose and cow pose. This loosens the neck and shoulders, where stress often sits.
Bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana) and Savasana
Lift the hips in Setu Bandhasana, then rest for 5–10 minutes in Savasana. Rest is the part of this practice that actually targets stress.
The extra poses often suggested for hair, such as standing forward bend and Downward Dog, put the head below the heart. Skip them if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma or a detached retina, or if they make you dizzy.
Breathing, mudras and Balayam
- Bhramari (humming bee breath) and Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing): 5–10 minutes a day is a simple stress-care habit.
- Yoga mudra for grey hair: Prana mudra (ring and little finger touching the thumb) is traditionally used for energy and vitality. No mudra can reverse grey hair; use it as a calm focus while you breathe.
- Balayam (rubbing the fingernails of both hands together) is widely promoted as yoga for grey hair and hair growth. There are no studies showing it works. It is harmless if gentle, but do not expect it to change your hair colour.
Premature greying: get these checked first
If you are greying early, especially with tiredness, pale skin, tingling in hands or feet, weight change or feeling cold, ask your doctor for blood tests:
- Vitamin B12 (and folate). Low B12 is common in vegetarians and vegans and in people taking metformin or acid-reducing medicine. See yoga for anemia.
- Thyroid function. An underactive thyroid can affect hair colour and texture. See yoga for thyroid.
- Iron and vitamin D, which your doctor may add.
This is the most practical help with grey hair that starts early. Treating a real deficiency is the most promising way to slow or control grey hair when a deficiency is the cause. Taking supplements without a test is not proven to help and can mask other problems. Sudden greying in patches, or with patches of hair loss, needs a doctor or dermatologist.
How to prevent premature greying of hair (what you can control)
- Do not smoke. Smoking is linked to early greying and harms hair in other ways.
- Manage stress. Regular yoga, walking, sleep and time off help. Our yoga for stress plan is a good companion to this page.
- Eat a balanced diet with enough protein, B12 (dairy, eggs, fish, or fortified foods for vegans), iron and folate.
- Keep a healthy weight.
- Protect hair from harsh bleaching and too much heat.
These steps, with yoga for stress, may slow down grey hair naturally in some people, but you cannot avoid grey hair that is genetic. There is no natural way to reverse grey hair once it is established.
Grey hair treatments, home remedies and Ayurveda
How to treat grey hair, or lessen how much white hair shows? The best grey hair treatment, for men and women alike, is still cosmetic: permanent or semi-permanent dye, henna, or highlights that blend grey in. Grey hair treatment in Ayurveda uses oils and herbs such as amla and bhringraj; they may condition the hair and scalp, but there is no good evidence that they restore colour. The same is true of most home remedies for grey hair, such as curry leaves or onion juice. Patch-test anything new on your skin first.
How to deal with grey (gray) hair, or embrace it
Many people decide the best way to embrace grey hair is simply to stop fighting it. If you want to let your hair go grey:
- Grow out your grey hair with a shorter cut or soft highlights to blur the line.
- Grey hair is often drier and coarser: use a gentle shampoo, a regular conditioner and a weekly deep conditioning treatment for grey hair to smooth and strengthen it (in US spelling, to strengthen gray hair).
- For ideas for grey hair that looks its best, ask a hairdresser about styles and cuts that enhance grey hair's natural shine.
- A purple shampoo once a week keeps yellow tones away.
Good hair care for grey natural hair is about moisture and protection, and these grey hair solutions work for women and men alike. For older women with gray or white hair, and older men too, yoga still has plenty to offer, just for the body and mind rather than the hair colour.
Does yoga help with hair growth and hair fall?
Stress can trigger a type of temporary hair shedding, so yoga for hair loss and hair fall may help indirectly by lowering stress. Yoga for hair growth and thickness is not proven, and yoga asanas for hair growth cannot treat genetic hair loss. Research behind this plan
- Zhang 2020, Nature — in mice, stress-activated sympathetic nerves permanently deplete melanocyte stem cells, causing grey hair
- Rosenberg 2021, eLife — some human grey hairs naturally regain colour, in some cases alongside reduced psychological stress
- Shin 2015, J Am Acad Dermatol — survey of 6,390 young men: family history, obesity and smoking linked to premature greying

Frequently asked questions
Can yoga turn grey hair black?
No. There is no evidence that any yoga pose, mudra or Balayam turns grey hair black. Greying is mostly genetic. Yoga may help with stress, which is linked to greying.
What is the best yoga for premature grey hair?
A calming routine: Vajrasana, Child's pose, Hare pose, cat and cow, Bridge and Savasana, plus Bhramari and Anulom Vilom. Its value is stress relief, not reversing colour.
Does Balayam (nail rubbing) stop grey hair?
There are no studies showing Balayam prevents or reverses grey hair. It is harmless if done gently, but do not rely on it.
How can I reverse premature greying of hair?
Usually you cannot. If early greying is linked to low vitamin B12 or a thyroid problem, treating it may slow further greying, and rarely some hairs regain colour. Get a blood test first.
Does stress cause grey hair?
Research suggests it can speed up greying. Mouse studies show stress uses up the pigment stem cells, and a human study linked some greying and regained colour to stress levels.
What deficiency causes grey hair?
Studies link early greying with low vitamin B12, and some with low folate, biotin, iron or vitamin D, and with an underactive thyroid. A doctor can test for these.
How can I slow down grey hair naturally?
Do not smoke, manage stress, eat a balanced diet with enough B12, keep a healthy weight and treat any deficiency your doctor finds. Genetic greying will still happen.
Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
