More poses that help with high cholesterol

Add these once the session above feels easy, or swap one in when a pose does not suit you.

    Mudras for high cholesterol

Hold a mudra while you sit for the breathing practice or a few minutes of quiet. Mudras are a traditional practice; research on them is limited.

    Avoid

Stopping cholesterol medicine. Skip Kapalbhati if you also have heart disease or high blood pressure.

Emerging evidence: Small or early trials look promising.

Yoga for cholesterol works best as part of a bigger plan: a heart-friendly diet, daily movement, a healthy weight, no smoking and, when your doctor prescribes it, medicine such as a statin. Yoga adds regular muscle work, lower stress and, for many people, better habits. Studies suggest it can modestly improve cholesterol levels, but it is not a replacement for treatment.

Do not stop or reduce cholesterol medicine without your doctor. Very high LDL, especially if it runs in the family (familial hypercholesterolaemia), needs medicine; lifestyle alone is rarely enough. If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, skip Kapalbhati and ask your doctor which exercise is safe.

    Can yoga lower cholesterol?

It may help a little. Cholesterol travels in the blood in particles: LDL ("bad") cholesterol builds up in artery walls, HDL ("good") cholesterol carries it away, and triglycerides are another blood fat linked to diet, alcohol and belly fat. Regular exercise mostly lowers triglycerides and slightly raises HDL; its effect on LDL is small. Diet and medicine move LDL the most.

The evidence for yoga is emerging:

    • A 2014 meta-analysis in the International Journal of Cardiology (44 randomised trials, 3,168 people) found that, compared with no exercise, yoga lowered total cholesterol by about 13 mg/dL and VLDL, and raised HDL by about 3 mg/dL. Compared with other exercise, yoga raised HDL slightly more. The authors noted that many trials had weaknesses.
    • A small 2026 randomised trial of 40 overweight women with type 2 diabetes and fatty liver found that eight weeks of yoga, three times a week, lowered LDL and triglycerides and raised HDL compared with usual activity.

So, does yoga lower cholesterol? Studies suggest a modest benefit, similar to or a little better than other exercise, but the trials are small. Yoga to reduce cholesterol in 7 days or in 30 days is not realistic; lipid changes from exercise take at least 8–12 weeks of regular practice.

Yoga poses for cholesterol, one by one

These eight yoga asanas are the guided session on this page. They are chosen to keep large muscles working, because active muscle burns fat and sugar, not because any pose "melts" cholesterol.

    1. Mountain Pose: start tall

Tadasana sets your posture and breath before the work begins.

    2. Chair Pose: big leg muscles

Utkatasana works the thighs and glutes hard. Hold for a few breaths, rest and repeat, or move in and out of it with the breath to raise your heart rate.

    3. Warrior II: strength and stamina

Virabhadrasana II builds leg and hip strength and endurance. Keep the front knee over the ankle.

    4. Triangle Pose: side body

Trikonasana stretches the waist and hamstrings and works the legs. Rest the lower hand on the shin or a block.

    5. Cobra Pose: back and chest

Bhujangasana strengthens the back and opens the chest after sitting.

    6. Locust Pose: the whole back

Salabhasana works the back, glutes and legs at once.

    7. Bridge Pose: glutes and thighs

Setu Bandhasana is another big-muscle pose; lift and lower slowly several times.

    8. Half Lord of the Fishes: twist

Ardha Matsyendrasana mobilises the spine and waist. Twist gently from the ribs, not by pulling with the arms.

The "More poses" list adds Bow, Boat and Wind-Relieving Pose for more core work. To make the session more aerobic, add rounds of Surya Namaskar at a steady pace.

    Breathing and mudra for cholesterol

Anulom Vilom is calming and safe for most people; stress raises blood pressure and makes healthy eating harder. Kapalbhati is a fast, forceful breath often recommended for cholesterol and weight loss in Indian yoga traditions. It is not proven to lower cholesterol, and it is not for people with heart disease, high blood pressure, hernia, pregnancy or epilepsy. The yoga mudra for cholesterol usually suggested is Surya Mudra; it is a traditional practice with no scientific evidence for lowering cholesterol, so treat it as part of a calm sitting practice only.

Which yoga is best to reduce cholesterol?

The best yoga for cholesterol and weight loss is the one that keeps you moving for longer. A steady flow with standing poses and Sun Salutations uses more energy than a slow, restful class. The best plan is to mix:

    ActivityHow muchWhy
This yoga session or a flowing practice3–5 times a week, 30 minutesMuscle strength, flexibility, stress
Brisk walking, cycling or swimming150 minutes a week in totalAerobic exercise raises HDL and lowers triglycerides
Breathing or Yoga Nidra10 minutes dailyStress and sleep

You can estimate how much energy a session uses with the yoga calories calculator, and plan the week with the yoga plan maker.

How to control cholesterol with yoga and exercise at home

How to control high cholesterol through yoga in practice? Treat the session as your home exercise to lower cholesterol, and repeat it most days. Yoga for cholesterol control is about regularity: three short sessions a week will do more than one long class.

    • Weeks 1–2: learn the poses slowly; use the shorter hold setting. These first yoga poses for high cholesterol should feel comfortable, not exhausting.
    • Weeks 3–8: use normal holds, add two to four rounds of Sun Salutations and a daily walk. This is the core of exercise to reduce cholesterol.
    • From week 8: use longer holds or a faster flow, and ask your doctor about a repeat lipid test.

Which yoga is good for cholesterol if you are a beginner or older? Start with Mountain, Bridge, Cobra and the twist, and add the standing poses as you get stronger. Yoga for lowering cholesterol does not need difficult poses; it needs time on the mat.

For high cholesterol and triglycerides together, the priority is weight, sugar and alcohol; yoga for high cholesterol and triglycerides helps by adding daily activity. To lower LDL, the best exercise for high cholesterol is consistent moderate exercise plus diet, because reduce LDL cholesterol exercise effects are small on their own. To boost HDL cholesterol, aerobic exercise and not smoking matter most, and yoga for HDL cholesterol adds a small extra lift.

Exercises to lower cholesterol levels at home do not need equipment: this yoga session, climbing stairs, brisk walking and dancing all count. Yoga to reduce cholesterol naturally works best when it also helps you sleep, manage stress and eat better, which many people find it does.

How to lower cholesterol naturally: steps beyond yoga

These steps to take to lower cholesterol have the strongest evidence. They work for men and women; women after menopause often see LDL rise and benefit from the same steps.

    • Swap saturated fat for healthy fats. Less butter, ghee, fatty meat, fried food and baked snacks; more nuts, seeds, olive, mustard or other vegetable oils, and fish.
    • Eat more soluble fibre. Oats, barley, beans, lentils, chickpeas, fruit and vegetables help lower LDL.
    • Cut sugar and refined carbs. They raise triglycerides.
    • Lose some weight if you carry extra, especially around the waist; see yoga for weight loss.
    • Stop smoking and keep alcohol low.
    • Get your levels checked and take medicine if your doctor advises it.

Ayurveda for high cholesterol and other holistic ways to lower cholesterol levels are popular, but herbal products can interact with medicine. Tell your doctor about anything you take.

    Cholesterol, diabetes and heart health

High cholesterol often comes with high blood sugar, high blood pressure and belly fat. Yoga treatment for diabetes and cholesterol together makes sense, because the same habits help all of them; see yoga for diabetes and yoga for heart health. People with diabetes should check their blood sugar around exercise if they take insulin or sulfonylureas.

    Side effects and safety

Yoga for cholesterol has few side effects when practised sensibly. Warm up, breathe normally and never hold your breath in strong poses. Stop and seek help for chest pain, unusual breathlessness, dizziness or palpitations. Statins sometimes cause muscle aches; mention new or unusual muscle pain to your doctor rather than blaming the yoga.

Cholesterol kaise kam kare: yoga asanas and food

Readers in India often search "cholesterol kaise kam kare" or "cholesterol kam karne ke liye kya karen". The answer is the same plan: these yoga asanas for cholesterol, a daily walk, and food changes. For "cholesterol kam karne ke liye kya khayen", think oats, dal, chana, rajma, vegetables, fruit, nuts and less ghee, fried snacks and sweets. LDL (bad) cholesterol kaise kam kare? Mostly through diet and, when needed, medicine. For women, how to lower cholesterol naturally is no different, though checks become more important after menopause.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can yoga lower cholesterol?

Studies suggest regular yoga may modestly lower total cholesterol and triglycerides and raise HDL, especially over several months. The trials are small, so use yoga alongside diet, walking and any medicine your doctor prescribes.

Which yoga is best to reduce cholesterol?

A flowing practice with standing poses such as Chair, Warrior II and Triangle, plus Sun Salutations, keeps large muscles working. Combine it with 150 minutes a week of brisk walking or similar exercise.

Can yoga reduce cholesterol in 7 days?

No. Cholesterol changes from exercise take at least two to three months of regular practice. Be wary of any claim of fast results.

    Does yoga raise HDL cholesterol?

Research suggests yoga may raise HDL by a small amount, a little more than some other types of exercise. Aerobic exercise, not smoking and a healthy weight also help.

    Is Kapalbhati good for cholesterol?

Kapalbhati is traditionally recommended, but there is no good evidence that it lowers cholesterol. It is not safe with heart disease, high blood pressure, hernia, pregnancy or epilepsy.

Can I stop my statin if I do yoga?

No. Never stop cholesterol medicine without talking to your doctor. Yoga works with medicine, not instead of it.

What is the best exercise for high cholesterol?

A mix of aerobic exercise (brisk walking, cycling, swimming) and strength work, such as the yoga poses here, is best. The most important thing is doing it most days of the week.

Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
