Mudras for uric acid and gout

Hold a mudra while you sit for the breathing practice or a few minutes of quiet. Mudras are a traditional practice; research on them is limited.

    Avoid

Loading a hot, swollen joint during a gout attack; rest it and see a doctor. Yoga helps weight and stress, it does not lower uric acid by itself.

Traditional practice: Used in classical yoga therapy; few clinical trials so far.

Yoga for uric acid is a common search, so it is worth starting honestly: no yoga pose or breathing exercise has been shown to lower uric acid in the blood. What lowers uric acid is medicine (when your doctor prescribes it), weight loss, less alcohol and sugary drinks, and a sensible diet. Yoga still has a real place in a gout plan. Gentle, regular movement keeps joints mobile between attacks, supports weight control, and calms the stress and poor sleep that often come with a painful condition.

During a gout attack (a hot, red, swollen, very painful joint), rest the joint and see a doctor. Do not stretch or put weight through it. Seek urgent care if you have a fever with a hot joint, as it could be an infection. Keep taking uric acid-lowering medicine even when you feel well; stopping it often triggers new attacks.

What are high uric acid and gout?

Uric acid is a waste product made when the body breaks down purines, found in our own cells and in some foods and drinks. The kidneys usually remove it. When levels stay high for a long time, sharp crystals can form in joints and cause gout: sudden attacks of severe pain, most often in the big toe, but also the ankle, knee, wrist or fingers. Over years, crystals can build up into lumps (tophi) and damage joints and kidneys.

Uric acid badhne ke karan (common causes of high uric acid) include genes, being overweight, kidney problems, alcohol (especially beer), sugary drinks with fructose, lots of red meat and seafood, and some medicines such as certain water pills. Uric acid ke lakshan: high uric acid alone often causes no symptoms. It is found on a blood test. Gout attacks, joint pain and kidney stones are the signs that it has started to cause problems.

Can yoga lower uric acid? What the evidence says

The evidence for yoga here is only traditional. There are no reliable trials showing yoga reduces uric acid. Claims that twists "flush" uric acid or that certain poses "stimulate the kidneys" are traditional ideas, not proven effects.

The 2020 American College of Rheumatology gout guideline strongly recommends uric acid-lowering medicine for people with frequent attacks, tophi or joint damage, aiming for a blood uric acid below 6 mg/dL. For lifestyle, it suggests limiting alcohol, purine-rich food and high-fructose corn syrup, and losing weight if you are overweight. Yoga can help you with that last step and with staying active, which is why it belongs in the plan as a support, not a treatment.

Yoga poses for uric acid and gout, one by one

These eight gentle yoga asanas are the guided session on this page. They are chosen to be kind to sore feet and knees: most are done sitting or lying down. Do them between attacks, never on a hot, swollen joint.

    1. Mountain Pose: even weight

Tadasana teaches you to spread your weight across both feet. If a toe or ankle is tender, stand for only a few breaths or skip it.

    2. Easy Pose: sit and breathe

Sukhasana on a cushion, or on a chair if your knees or ankles hurt. This is where you do the breathing.

3 and 4. Cat and Cow: spine and wrists

Cat and Cow move the spine gently. Pad the knees with a folded blanket; if the wrists or knees are sore, do it seated with hands on the knees.

    5. Bridge Pose: legs and hips

Setu Bandhasana strengthens the glutes and thighs without weight on the toes. Lift and lower slowly.

    6. Wind-Relieving Pose: hips and lower back

Pavanamuktasana hugs one knee at a time to the chest. It eases a stiff lower back and hip. Hold behind the thigh rather than over a sore knee.

    7. Reclining Bound Angle: rest

Supta Baddha Konasana with cushions under both knees is a restful pose for the end of a stressful day.

    8. Corpse Pose: relax fully

Savasana, with a pillow under the knees. Longer relaxation is available as guided Yoga Nidra, which may also help sleep during a painful spell.

Between attacks, when your joints are calm, the "More poses" list adds Cobra, Locust, a seated twist and Vajrasana. Skip Vajrasana if your knees, ankles or toes are sore, since you sit on your feet.

    Breathing and mudra

Anulom Vilom and Bhramari are slow, gentle breathing practices that calm the nervous system and can make pain easier to cope with. Neither lowers uric acid. The yoga mudra for uric acid usually suggested is Apana Mudra; it is a traditional practice without scientific evidence, so enjoy it as part of a quiet sitting practice only.

    Yoga during a gout attack

How to get relief from uric acid pain during a flare? Rest, raise and cool the joint, and take the medicine your doctor has advised for flares. Loading or stretching a hot joint makes it worse. You can still do yoga for gout pain in a limited way: lie down, breathe slowly with Bhramari, and gently move the joints that are not affected. Return to the full session once the swelling and heat have settled, starting with shorter holds.

How to lower uric acid: what really works

If you want to know how to control high uric acid in your body, these steps matter far more than any pose:

    • Take urate-lowering medicine if prescribed, and have regular blood tests. The usual goal for uric acid is below 6 mg/dL, set by your doctor.
    • Lose weight gradually if you are overweight. Avoid crash diets and long fasting, which can raise uric acid and trigger attacks. See yoga for weight loss.
    • Cut down alcohol, especially beer and spirits.
    • Avoid sugary drinks and fruit juices sweetened with fructose.
    • Limit purine-rich food: organ meats, red meat, some seafood such as anchovies, sardines and shellfish.
    • Drink enough water unless your doctor has told you to limit fluids.

Uric acid me kya khana chahiye (what to eat)? Vegetables, whole grains, dal and pulses in normal amounts, low-fat milk and curd, fruit such as cherries, and plenty of water. Vegetables that contain purines, like spinach or peas, have not been shown to raise gout risk the way meat and alcohol do.

The fastest way to lower uric acid is medicine; there is no quick home remedy. How long to lower uric acid levels with medicine? Usually weeks to months, and flares can happen early on, so doctors often give extra medicine to prevent them at the start. Uric acid treatment in Ayurveda and other ayurvedic treatment for high uric acid are popular, but they are not proven to reach safe levels, and herbal products can interact with medicine. Talk to your doctor before trying them.

Uric acid kaise kam kare: managing high uric acid naturally

Many readers ask "uric acid kaise kam kare" or "uric acid ko kam kaise kare". To manage uric acid naturally, combine the food steps above with regular exercise to reduce uric acid indirectly, through weight and fitness. That is how to treat high uric acid naturally when levels are only mildly raised and you have never had gout; your doctor may simply recheck the blood test after a few months.

To lower high uric acid levels once gout has started, lifestyle alone is rarely enough, and medicine is the main treatment. The yoga asanas for high uric acid on this page then play a supporting role. Yoga for uric acid control means using yoga to keep the habits going, not expecting a pose to change your blood test. The Hindi box below sums up yoga for uric acid in Hindi.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can yoga reduce uric acid?

No reliable study shows that yoga lowers uric acid. Yoga can help with weight, activity, stress and joint stiffness, which supports the diet changes and medicine that do lower uric acid.

Which yoga is best for uric acid and gout?

Gentle poses that do not load sore feet: Easy Pose, Cat and Cow, Bridge, Wind-Relieving Pose, Reclining Bound Angle and Corpse Pose, plus slow breathing such as Anulom Vilom.

Can I do yoga during a gout attack?

Rest the affected joint and do not stretch or load it. You can do slow breathing and gently move other joints. Return to the full session once the heat and swelling settle.

What is the fastest way to lower uric acid?

Uric acid-lowering medicine prescribed by your doctor. Lifestyle changes help, but they work slowly and usually lower levels only a little.

What should I eat with high uric acid?

Vegetables, whole grains, pulses, low-fat dairy, cherries and plenty of water. Limit beer, spirits, sugary drinks, organ meats, red meat and some seafood.

Is Apana Mudra good for uric acid?

Apana Mudra is a traditional hand gesture without scientific evidence for lowering uric acid. It is harmless as part of a calm sitting practice.

Should I stop gout medicine when my uric acid is normal?

No. A normal level usually means the medicine is working. Stopping it often brings the uric acid and the attacks back. Talk to your doctor before changing anything.

Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
