Yoga for piles will not shrink a haemorrhoid on its own, but it can help with the things that make piles worse: straining on the toilet, constipation, sitting for hours and a tense pelvic floor. This page explains what yoga for hemorrhoids can and cannot do, the gentle poses in the session, a daily routine, the exercises to avoid with hemorrhoids, and when bleeding or pain needs a doctor.
What piles are, and why straining matters
Piles (haemorrhoids) are swollen blood vessels in and around the anus. Internal piles sit inside and often cause painless bright red bleeding after a bowel movement. External piles sit near the opening and can itch, ache or become very painful if a clot forms. Anything that raises pressure in the lower rectum makes them worse: pushing hard to pass stool, constipation, heavy lifting, pregnancy and long toilet sessions.
That is where gentle movement fits. Regular activity helps the bowels, and relaxed breathing teaches the pelvic floor to let go instead of push. Both the NHS and the US NIDDK list avoiding straining, eating more fibre, drinking enough fluids and not lingering on the toilet as the first steps for piles.
Can yoga cure piles? What the evidence says
Many people search for a yoga for piles cure. Honestly, there is no good clinical trial showing that yoga cures piles, and this plan is based on traditional practice. What yoga may do is support the self-care that doctors recommend, so flare-ups are milder and less frequent. Large, prolapsed or clotted piles often need a medical procedure such as banding, and no pose replaces that.
So how do you treat piles naturally with yoga? Use it as one part of a plan: soft stools, no straining, daily movement and a calm toilet routine. Keep any cream, suppository or medicine your doctor has advised. Yoga for hemorrhoids treatment is always an add-on, not the treatment itself.
Yoga poses for piles and hemorrhoids
These yoga asanas for piles treatment support match the session cards above. Hold each for 5–8 slow breaths and keep your breath soft. Never hold your breath and bear down.
1. Thunderbolt pose (Vajrasana)
Kneel and sit back on your heels. Vajrasana is the classic yoga asana for piles in Indian tradition and is done after meals to support digestion. If sitting on your heels presses on painful piles, put a folded blanket or cushion between your heels and bottom, or skip it during a flare.
2. Wind-relieving pose (Pavanamuktasana)
Lie on your back and hug one knee, then the other, then both. Pavanamuktasana helps gas and stool move, which is why it is part of yoga for piles and constipation. Breathe out slowly as you hug in; do not squeeze hard.
3. Child's pose (Balasana)
Fold forward from kneeling with your forehead on the mat or a cushion. Balasana is restful and lets the lower back and pelvic floor soften. Knees wide feels better for most people with piles.
4. Cat–cow (Marjaryasana–Bitilasana)
On hands and knees, round the back as you breathe out in cat pose and let the belly drop as you breathe in with cow pose. With the hips higher than the heart, this position takes a little pressure off the rectal veins while you move the spine.
5. Bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana)
Lie on your back, knees bent, and lift your hips a little. Setu Bandhasana gently raises the pelvis above the chest and strengthens the buttocks. Keep the lift low and breathe normally; lower down if you feel any pressure in the bottom.
6. Reclining bound angle (Supta Baddha Konasana)
Lie back with the soles of your feet together and knees falling open, supported by cushions. Supta Baddha Konasana is the best pose in this set for relaxing the pelvic floor. Stay for 1–3 minutes with slow belly breathing.
From the "more poses" list, legs up the wall is a gentle, supported way to rest with the pelvis low and legs raised. It is not a strong inversion, and it is the only "upside down" pose we suggest for piles.
Breathing and pelvic floor relaxation
The most useful skill for piles is learning not to push. Try this lying down in Supta Baddha Konasana: breathe in and feel the belly and the pelvic floor gently widen and drop; breathe out slowly and let them rest. No squeezing and no holding.
Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) and Bhramari (humming bee breath) are both calm and safe for piles. They help if stress makes you rush on the toilet. We leave out Kapalbhati, Bhastrika and breath holds, because forceful breathing and holding raise pressure in the belly and rectum.
Exercises to avoid with hemorrhoids
Is exercise good for hemorrhoids? Yes, gentle daily exercise helps, especially walking. But some things raise pressure on the rectal veins and are best avoided, at least during a flare:
- Heavy lifting and gym lifts where you hold your breath and brace.
- Strong inversions such as headstand and shoulder stand.
- Deep squats (Malasana) and long holds on the heels while piles are swollen or painful.
- Forceful breathing: Kapalbhati, Bhastrika and long breath holds.
- Hard core work such as sit-ups and boat pose.
- Cycling or sitting on hard seats for long periods during a flare.
A daily routine for piles relief
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| On waking | Glass of water, knee hugs in bed, cat–cow |
| Morning | Guided session on this page (about 12 minutes), then breakfast with fibre |
| Toilet time | Go when you feel the urge, feet on a low stool, relaxed breathing, no phone, no straining, out within a few minutes |
| Afternoon | 20–30 minute walk; stand up every hour if you sit for work |
| Evening | Supported bound angle and legs up the wall, 5 minutes each; a warm bath if sore |
Practise most days for three to four weeks. Many people find the biggest change comes from softer stools and not straining, with yoga making the habit easier to keep.
How to relieve piles at home, beyond yoga
How to calm hemorrhoids at home, and how to soothe hemorrhoids at home when they flare, is mostly simple care. What is best for piles at home? The main home remedies for hemorrhoids relief recommended by the NHS and NIDDK are:
- Plenty of fibre (fruit, vegetables, whole grains, pulses) and fluids so stools stay soft.
- Warm baths or a sitz bath to soothe pain and itching.
- An ice pack wrapped in a towel for a swollen, painful pile.
- Gentle cleaning with damp toilet paper; pat, do not rub.
- Simple pain relief such as paracetamol; avoid codeine, which causes constipation.
Is yogurt good for hemorrhoids? Plain yogurt is a fine part of a balanced diet, but fibre and water matter far more for soft stools. Ayurvedic treatment for piles often focuses on diet and digestion too; if you use herbal products or other home remedies for piles, tell your doctor. Home remedies for piles in females and males are the same: do not strain. If you want to know how to fix hemorrhoids at home or how to treat hemorrhoids at home quickly, soft stools and warm baths work faster than any pose.
Yoga for piles in different situations
Yoga for piles and fissure or fistula
A fissure is a small tear that causes sharp pain when passing stool; a fistula is a tunnel that often leaks pus. Both need a doctor. Gentle breathing and relaxing the pelvic floor can make toilet visits less tense, but yoga for piles and fistula is only support, never treatment.
Remedy for piles for women and in pregnancy
Piles are common in pregnancy and after birth. Cat–cow, supported bound angle, walking and relaxed breathing are usually safe; avoid lying flat on your back for long in later pregnancy, and ask your midwife before starting. After a birth, pelvic floor recovery matters; see yoga for the pelvic floor.
Natural remedy for piles in men and desk workers
Long hours of sitting and heavy lifting at the gym are common triggers. Stand up every hour, walk daily, and breathe out on effort when you lift instead of holding your breath.
Yoga for piles pain relief and recovery
How to soothe piles on a bad day: skip the full session, take a warm bath, then lie in supported bound angle or legs up the wall and breathe slowly. This gentle yoga for piles pain relief is about resting the area, not stretching it.
For a yoga for piles patient after banding or surgery, healing comes first. Walk short distances if your surgeon agrees, and wait for their go-ahead before bridges, cat–cow or anything on your knees. Yoga for piles recovery then starts with breathing and lying-down poses.
Internal piles symptoms and yoga: internal piles are often painless and show up only as bright red blood on the paper. Yoga cannot tell you why you are bleeding, so do not look for a bleeding piles treatment with yoga or a yoga cure. Get it checked first, then use the routine to support soft, easy bowel movements.
What is the best exercise for piles overall? Daily walking plus the gentle yoga exercises for hemorrhoids on this page. There is no exercise that cures hemorrhoids, but the right movement makes the piles problem easier to live with and less likely to return.
When to see a doctor
Always see a doctor about bleeding from your bottom, even if you think it is piles, so other causes such as bowel cancer or inflammatory bowel disease can be ruled out. Get urgent help for heavy or non-stop bleeding, severe pain, a high temperature, pus, dark or black stools, or if piles do not improve after a week of home care. Tell your doctor about changes in your bowel habits or weight loss.

Frequently asked questions
Can yoga cure piles permanently?
No. There is no evidence that yoga cures piles. Gentle yoga can support the habits that help most, such as avoiding straining, moving daily and relaxing the pelvic floor. Larger piles may need medical treatment.
Which yoga asana is best for piles?
Gentle poses such as wind-relieving pose, cat–cow, child's pose and supported bound angle are good choices. Vajrasana after meals is traditional; use a cushion if sitting on your heels hurts.
Is exercise good for hemorrhoids?
Yes, gentle exercise such as walking and yoga helps bowel movements. Avoid heavy lifting, breath holding, strong inversions and hard core work, especially during a flare.
How can I reduce piles pain at home?
Warm baths, an ice pack wrapped in a towel, soft stools from fibre and fluids, gentle cleaning and simple pain relief such as paracetamol. See a doctor if pain is severe or does not settle.
Can I do Malasana (squat) with piles?
A supported squat can help bowel movements when piles are calm, but skip deep squats and long holds while piles are swollen or painful.
Is Kapalbhati good for piles?
We do not recommend it for piles. Forceful breathing raises pressure in the belly and rectum. Anulom Vilom and Bhramari are calmer choices.
When should I worry about bleeding piles?
See a doctor about any bleeding from your bottom to rule out other causes. Get urgent help for heavy or ongoing bleeding, black stools, fever or severe pain.
Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
