Mudras for fatty liver
Hold a mudra while you sit for the breathing practice or a few minutes of quiet. Mudras are a traditional practice; research on them is limited.
Avoid
Relying on yoga alone: weight loss, less alcohol and diet matter most. See a doctor for yellow eyes or belly swelling.
Emerging evidence: Small or early trials look promising.
Yoga for fatty liver can be a useful part of treatment, but it is worth being clear from the start about what helps the liver most: losing some weight if you carry extra, eating less sugar and refined food, cutting down alcohol and moving your body every day. Yoga helps with the last part, and for many people it also makes the other changes easier. There is no pose that "cleanses" or "detoxes" the liver; the benefit comes from regular exercise.
See a doctor promptly if you notice yellow eyes or skin, a swollen belly, swelling of the legs, vomiting blood, black stools or confusion. These can be signs of advanced liver disease. Keep taking any medicine you are prescribed, and ask your doctor before starting exercise if you have cirrhosis, diabetes or heart disease.
What is fatty liver disease?
Fatty liver means extra fat has built up inside liver cells. The common form is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now also called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). It is closely linked to belly fat, type 2 diabetes, high triglycerides and high blood pressure. Alcohol-related fatty liver is a separate condition, where stopping alcohol is the key treatment.
Most people have no symptoms. When fatty liver ke lakshan (symptoms) do appear, they are vague: tiredness, or a dull ache or fullness under the right ribs. Many people learn about it from an ultrasound report that says "grade 1", "grade 2" or "grade 3" fatty liver. Those grades describe how much fat the scan shows; they do not measure scarring. Your doctor may order a blood test or a special scan (such as elastography) to check for fibrosis.
Is yoga good for fatty liver? What the research says
Exercise is clearly good for fatty liver; the evidence for yoga itself is emerging:
- A 2012 meta-analysis in the Journal of Hepatology found that exercise reduced liver fat even with little or no weight loss, and at amounts below the usual exercise recommendations. It did not clearly change the liver enzyme ALT.
- A small 2026 randomised trial of 40 overweight women with type 2 diabetes and fatty liver found that eight weeks of yoga, three times a week, lowered liver enzymes (ALT and AST), weight, waist size, blood sugar and blood fats compared with usual activity.
So yoga for fatty liver disease is a reasonable way to exercise, especially for people who find the gym hard, but it is not a cure. The idea of a cure for fatty liver by yoga alone is not supported; lifestyle change as a whole is what reverses it.
Yoga asanas for fatty liver, one by one
These eight poses are the guided session on this page. Standing poses and back strengtheners use large muscles, which is what burns fat; twists and core work add variety. Beginners can start with the standing poses and Bridge.
1. Mountain Pose: set up
Tadasana starts the session with good posture and steady breathing.
2. Chair Pose: the big leg muscles
Utkatasana is the most demanding pose for the thighs and glutes. Move in and out of it with the breath to raise your heart rate.
3. Triangle Pose: waist and legs
Trikonasana stretches the side body and works the legs. Use a block under the lower hand if needed.
4. Cobra Pose: back strength
Bhujangasana strengthens the back and opens the front of the body.
5. Bow Pose: back and legs together
Dhanurasana is traditionally linked with the abdominal organs. It is demanding: beginners can hold one ankle at a time, or do Locust instead. Skip it with back problems, a hernia, high blood pressure or in pregnancy.
6. Half Lord of the Fishes: twist
Ardha Matsyendrasana is often described as "massaging the liver". That is a traditional image, not a proven effect, but the twist keeps the spine mobile and feels good after standing work.
7. Bridge Pose: glutes and thighs
Setu Bandhasana works the glutes and hamstrings. Lift and lower several times.
8. Boat Pose: core
Naukasana strengthens the abdomen. Keep the knees bent and breathe normally.
Breathing: Kapalbhati and Anulom Vilom
Kapalbhati is widely recommended for fatty liver in Indian yoga programmes. It works the abdominal muscles, but there is no good evidence that it reduces liver fat. It is not safe with high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, recent abdominal surgery, pregnancy or epilepsy, or with advanced liver disease and a swollen belly. Anulom Vilom is gentle and safe for almost everyone and helps with stress, which drives comfort eating and poor sleep.
Yoga for fatty liver grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3
| Ultrasound report | What it means | Yoga and exercise |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 1 (mild) | A small amount of fat | The full session 4–5 times a week plus daily walking; this stage often improves with lifestyle change |
| Grade 2 (moderate) | More fat | Same plan; ask your doctor to check for fibrosis |
| Grade 3 (severe) / stage 3 fibrosis | A lot of fat, or scarring | Exercise is still helpful, but follow a liver specialist's plan and ask before intense practice |
| Cirrhosis | Advanced scarring | Gentle yoga only with your doctor's approval; avoid strong twists, core work and breath holds if you have a swollen belly or varices |
How to fight fatty liver: steps that matter most
If you are asking what steps reduce fatty liver, here they are in order of impact:
- Lose weight gradually if you carry extra. Even a modest loss reduces liver fat; a larger loss can improve inflammation and scarring. See yoga for weight loss and yoga for belly fat.
- Cut sugar, sweet drinks and refined flour. Fructose from sweet drinks is a major driver of liver fat.
- Limit or stop alcohol. Your doctor may advise none at all.
- Move every day. About 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, plus strength work such as this yoga session.
- Control diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure. See yoga for diabetes and yoga for cholesterol.

Yoga for fatty liver fibrosis or stage 3: exercise is still recommended, but the best therapy for fatty liver at this stage is a plan from a liver specialist, sometimes including medicine.
Yoga for liver pain: a dull ache under the right ribs is common, but new or severe liver pain needs a doctor before any yoga.
How to treat fatty liver in women: the plan is the same; women with PCOS or after menopause are at higher risk and benefit from regular checks. See yoga for PCOS.
Side effects: yoga for fatty liver has few side effects if you avoid Kapalbhati when it is not safe for you and build up intensity slowly. Stop if you feel dizzy or breathless.

Frequently asked questions
Is yoga good for fatty liver?
Yes, as a form of regular exercise. Exercise reduces liver fat even with little weight loss, and a small trial found yoga improved liver enzymes. Combine it with diet changes and weight loss for the best effect.
Can yoga cure fatty liver?
No single practice cures fatty liver. Weight loss, a lower-sugar diet, less alcohol and regular exercise, including yoga, can reverse early fatty liver in many people.
Which is the best yoga for fatty liver?
Active poses that use big muscles, such as Chair, Triangle, Cobra, Bow, Bridge and Boat, plus Sun Salutations and daily walking. The best yoga is the one you do most days.
Is Kapalbhati good for fatty liver?
It is traditionally recommended, but there is no good evidence that it reduces liver fat. Avoid it with high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, pregnancy, epilepsy or a swollen belly.
How long does it take to reverse fatty liver?
Liver fat can start to fall within a few months of steady exercise, diet change and weight loss. Your doctor can recheck with blood tests or a scan.
Can I do yoga with liver cirrhosis?
Gentle yoga may be possible, but only with your doctor’s approval. Avoid strong twists, intense core work and breath holding, especially with a swollen belly or varices.
Does yoga detox the liver?
No. The liver does not need a detox from poses. Yoga supports liver health by helping with weight, blood sugar and activity levels.
Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
