How to work with Manipura: step by step

  1. Practice on an empty stomach, ideally two to three hours after a meal.
  2. Build gentle heat with Plank, Boat and Warrior I, then wring out the belly with a seated twist.
  3. Sit tall with your hands in Rudra or Surya mudra. If suitable for you, do one short round of Kapalbhati; otherwise breathe slowly.
  4. Bring your attention to the navel and picture a bright yellow flame, steady and warm.
  5. Chant RAM aloud slowly, one sound per out-breath, for about nine to twelve rounds.
  6. Continue silently and feel warmth spreading out from the center of your body.
  7. Rest in Child's pose or Savasana for two minutes to let the energy settle.

Willpower · Confidence · Self-discipline · Energy · Transformation · Digestion of food and experience

Traditional powers of Manipura

  • Traditional texts describe the meditator on Manipura gaining the power to "create and destroy", meaning mastery over their own world
  • The Yoga Sutras say that focused attention on the navel center brings knowledge of the body's arrangement
  • Hatha texts link this fire with strong digestion and vitality

These are descriptions from yogic and tantric texts, not proven effects. Use them as themes for reflection, not as promises.

The Manipura chakra, called the solar plexus chakra or navel chakra in English, is the third of the seven chakras in yoga tradition. It is described at the navel and upper belly and is linked with the fire element, the colour yellow and the seed sound RAM. Its themes are willpower, confidence, self-discipline and the "digestive fire" that turns food and experience into energy.

This page goes beyond the steps and guided meditation above. It explains the name, how this chakra fits into the seven chakras, how to build a safe daily routine, what beginners get wrong, and what research does and does not support.

Manipura chakra meaning: "city of jewels"

The name joins mani, "jewel", and pura, "city" or "place". So the manipura chakra meaning in English is "city of jewels" or "place of the shining gem": a bright, radiant center, like the sun inside the body. You may see it written Manipur chakra or Manipuraka. For manipura chakra pronunciation, say MUH-ni-poo-ra.

The Manipura chakra name in Hindi and in many Indian families is simply the navel chakra (nabhi chakra), because it sits behind the navel; the navel chakra meaning is the same center seen from the front of the body. The English name comes from the solar plexus, a real network of nerves behind the stomach. The chakra and the nerve network share a neighbourhood and a name, but they are not the same thing: one is a map from tradition, the other is anatomy.

What does the solar plexus chakra do?

In the chakra system, the root gives you safety and the sacral chakra gives you feeling and desire. Manipura turns those into action. It represents your sense of "I can": making decisions, keeping promises to yourself, standing up for your boundaries. Hatha yoga also links it with agni, the digestive fire, and with samana vayu, the part of the breath said to balance and absorb. That is why the Manipura chakra is related to both digestion and self-confidence, and why its spiritual meaning is often summed up as "the inner sun" of the solar plexus chakra.

Manipura chakra symbol and colour

The classic manipura chakra symbol is a lotus with ten petals around a downward-pointing red triangle, the sign of fire. A ram, an animal known for its forceful energy, is its traditional vehicle. Interestingly, the old texts describe the ten petals as dark blue, like heavy rain clouds, while modern books give manipura chakra color as yellow, the colour of sunlight and warmth. Both images point to the same idea: fire that is strong but held.

Where is the Manipura chakra located?

The manipura chakra location is traditionally given at the navel, with the center of the chakra on the spine directly behind it. Modern books often place the solar plexus chakra a little higher, between the navel and the bottom of the breastbone. For practice, rest your attention at the navel and feel the belly move as you breathe; that is close enough.

RAM: the Manipura chakra beej mantra

The solar plexus chakra mantra is RAM, the bija of fire. Say it "rum", rhyming with "drum", with a slight roll of the "r" if that comes naturally. It is different from the name of Lord Rama, though both are chanted in India. Chant it on the out-breath, one sound per breath, for nine to twelve rounds, then continue silently.

The most used Manipura chakra mudra is Rudra mudra, traditionally linked with the solar plexus and with clear, steady energy. Surya mudra, the sun gesture, is the other common choice. The manipura chakra mudra benefits people describe are a sense of warmth and alertness; treat them as experiences, not promises.

How to balance the Manipura chakra day to day

How to activate the Manipura chakra, or how to open, unblock and balance the solar plexus chakra, is one of the most searched questions. In practice, balance comes from two things done regularly: honest effort in the body and calm attention at the navel. Morning suits this chakra best, because fire practices are energising and can disturb sleep late at night.

WhenPracticeTime
Morning, empty stomachCore flow: Plank, Boat pose, Warrior I, then a seated twist10 min
Morning, after posesBreathing (see safety below), then RAM chanting with Rudra mudra5–10 min
Before a hard taskThree slow breaths into the belly, hand on the navel, one silent RAM1 min
EveningA soft seated twist and Child's pose; no fast breathing5 min

Practise five days a week for four weeks, then review how your energy and follow-through feel. Keep the effort at about seven out of ten: firm, never straining.

Manipura chakra yoga poses for beginners

The best solar plexus chakra yoga poses and Manipura chakra asanas work the core or wring out the belly. Beginners can do Plank on the knees, Boat pose with bent knees and hands behind the thighs, and Half Lord of the Fishes as a gentle twist. More experienced students can add Bow pose, which presses the navel into the floor. For a yin yoga approach to the Manipura chakra, hold a supported twist or Sphinx for three minutes and breathe slowly into the upper belly.

Breathing practices and safety

The traditional fire breaths are Kapalbhati and Agnisar Kriya, which pump or roll the belly. They are strong. Do them only on an empty stomach and skip them completely if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, heart disease, a hernia, recent abdominal surgery, epilepsy, glaucoma or acid reflux. Slow belly breathing is a safe alternative for everyone.

Solar plexus chakra affirmations

Manipura chakra affirmations come after chanting. Pick one: "I can do what I set out to do." "I act with calm strength." "My no is as kind as my yes." Solar plexus chakra affirmations work best when you follow them with one small action the same day.

Beginner mistakes

  • Too much fire. Hard core work every day, fast breathing and little rest can leave you wired and irritable, which tradition itself calls imbalance. Balance effort with rest.
  • Practising after meals. Twists, Bow and belly breathing on a full stomach cause discomfort. Wait two to three hours.
  • Reading symptoms as chakra signs. Solar plexus chakra imbalance symptoms and navel chakra blockage symptoms listed online, such as stomach aches, acidity or fatigue, can have medical causes. Get them checked. See also yoga for digestion.
  • Waiting for "activation". The Manipura chakra activation symptoms described in books, such as warmth in the belly, are common and pleasant. It is not required, and chasing it leads to straining.

What research says

No study has measured a chakra, so claims about solar plexus chakra healing, a special solar plexus chakra frequency or yellow crystals for this chakra cannot be supported by science. Navel chakra healing and Manipura chakra healing are best understood as traditional language for these practices. Some modern teachers also call it the chakra responsible for manifestation; that is a recent idea rather than part of the classic texts.

The practices themselves are easier to judge. Regular exercise, including yoga, is well known to lift mood and energy. Small, repeated wins, like finishing a hold you found hard last week, are what psychologists call building self-efficacy, a belief in your own ability. That fits the traditional Manipura chakra benefits of confidence and follow-through very well. If low confidence is your main reason for practising, yoga for self-confidence has a guided session.

From fire to the heart

What happens when the Manipura chakra opens? In the traditional telling, the practitioner moves from asking "what do I want?" to "what can I do?", and the energy rising from the navel can then reach the Anahata (heart) chakra, where strength softens into care. Some texts treat Manipura as an important stage in the rise of kundalini. A "Manipura chakra dominant" person is sketched as driven, practical and a natural leader. The voice in the player above follows a short solar plexus chakra meditation script, and the routine above turns these practices for the solar plexus chakra into a daily habit. For silent RAM practice after your poses, use the meditation timer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Manipura chakra?

Manipura, the solar plexus or navel chakra, is the third of the seven chakras in yoga tradition. It is described at the navel, linked with fire, the colour yellow and the mantra RAM, and associated with willpower, confidence and digestion.

Where is the Manipura chakra located?

At the navel, with the center traditionally placed on the spine directly behind it. Modern books often place the solar plexus chakra a little higher, between the navel and the lower tip of the breastbone.

How do I activate or strengthen the Manipura chakra?

In the morning on an empty stomach, do a short core flow (Plank, Boat, Warrior I and a twist), then sit with Rudra or Surya mudra and chant RAM slowly for a few minutes. Practise most days for several weeks. Tradition calls this activation; practically, it builds energy and self-discipline.

What are the signs of an imbalanced solar plexus chakra?

In the traditional view: low motivation, feeling powerless, needing approval, or the opposite, being bossy, impatient and burning out. Digestive problems and fatigue should be checked by a doctor, because they often have physical causes.

What is the mantra for the solar plexus chakra?

RAM, pronounced "rum". It is the seed (bija) sound of the fire element. Chant it slowly, one sound per out-breath, then repeat it silently.

Is Kapalbhati good for the Manipura chakra?

Kapalbhati is the traditional fire breath for this chakra, but it is not for everyone. Avoid it in pregnancy, with high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, epilepsy, glaucoma or after abdominal surgery, and always practise on an empty stomach. Slow belly breathing is a safe alternative.

What does the solar plexus chakra represent?

It represents personal power: the ability to decide, act and keep healthy boundaries. Its symbol, a ten-petalled lotus around a fire triangle, stands for energy that is strong but contained.

Manipur chakra kaise jagrit kare?

Subah khaali pet Naukasana, Phalakasana aur Ardha Matsyendrasana karein. Phir Rudra mudra mein baith kar naabhi par dhyan rakhein aur dheere dheere RAM mantra ka jaap karein. High BP ya pregnancy mein Kapalbhati na karein.

Chakras, kundalini and the traditional powers linked to them come from yogic and tantric tradition. They are not anatomical structures and these descriptions are not medical claims. Meditation and gentle yoga are generally safe, but intense breathing, long breath holds or very long sittings can cause dizziness, anxiety or distress, and may not suit people with heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, pregnancy or a history of psychosis, bipolar disorder or trauma. Keep any prescribed treatment, practise gently and stop if you feel unwell. See our medical disclaimer.
