Expecting new growth: yoga does not lengthen adult bones. It helps you stand straighter and look taller; growth in children depends on genes, food and sleep.

Traditional practice: Used in classical yoga therapy; few clinical trials so far.

Yoga for height increase is one of the most searched yoga topics, so let us start with the honest answer: yoga cannot make your bones longer. Your final height is set mostly by your genes, and during childhood by good food, enough sleep and good health. What yoga can do is help you stand at your full height. Years of slouching over phones and desks can take a visible centimetre or two off how tall you look, and posture work can bring that back.

On this site this page is called Yoga for Height and Posture, because posture is what yoga can truly change.

    Can yoga increase height?

Not in the sense of new growth. Bones grow in length at the growth plates, thin layers of cartilage near the ends of the long bones. Once they close, usually between the mid-teens and early twenties (earlier in girls, later in boys), no exercise, stretch or pose can add bone length. So does yoga make you taller? It can make you stand taller, which is a real and visible change, but it is not growth.

Two effects explain why people feel taller after yoga:

    • Posture. A rounded upper back, a forward head and slumped shoulders lower your standing height. Strengthening the back and opening the chest reverses some of that.
    • Daily disc changes. The discs between your vertebrae lose a little fluid during the day and regain it overnight, so everyone is slightly taller in the morning. Stretching can make you feel longer for a while, but it is temporary.

Evidence for yoga and height is traditional: no study shows yoga adds bone length. There is research on posture, though. A 2009 randomised trial in older adults with a rounded upper back found that a yoga programme improved some measures of kyphosis (upper-back rounding). That is the kind of change you can realistically expect.

Yoga for height increase for children and teenagers

If you are looking at yoga for height increase for a child or teenager, the good news is that they are still growing, and healthy habits help them reach the height their genes allow. Yoga is a good part of that, but it is not the main part. What really matters:

    • Enough sleep. Growth hormone is released mainly during deep sleep. School-age children need about 9–12 hours, teenagers about 8–10.
    • Good food. Enough protein (milk, curd, eggs, lentils, beans, fish, paneer), calcium, vitamin D, iron and overall calories. Undernutrition is the most common preventable cause of short height worldwide.
    • Daily activity. Running, jumping, swimming, cycling and sport build strong bones. Yoga adds flexibility, balance and posture.
    • Health checks. If a child is much shorter than classmates or stops growing, see a paediatrician. Thyroid problems, coeliac disease or growth hormone deficiency can be treated.

Yoga for height increase for teenagers, or before 18, is therefore a healthy habit rather than a growth tool. Yoga for height increase after 15, after 16 or at 17 cannot push growth beyond what the genes and growth plates allow, but good sleep, food and activity help a teen reach their full potential. See healthy weight gain if a thin teenager also needs to build up.

Yoga for height increase for adults (after 18, 20, 25 or 30)

For adults, yoga for height increase after 18, after 20, after 25 or after 30 works only through posture. That is still worth doing. A person who slouches can look noticeably shorter than the same person standing tall, and good posture also eases neck and back pain. Men and women both lose some height with age, mostly from disc changes and rounded posture, so posture work pays off more with every decade. Read more in yoga for posture.

Yoga poses to stand taller, one by one

These eight yoga asanas are in the guided session. Together they are the best yoga for "height increase" in the honest sense: they strengthen the muscles that hold you upright and open the areas that pull you into a slouch.

    1. Mountain Pose: learn your full height

Tadasana teaches you what standing tall feels like. Feet together or hip-width apart, weight even, thighs firm, tailbone long, crown of the head reaching up, chin level. Practise it against a wall.

    2. Raised Arms Pose: lengthen the sides

Hasta Uttanasana reaches the arms overhead and lifts the rib cage off the hips. Keep the lower ribs in rather than arching the lower back.

    3. Tree Pose: balance and alignment

Vrikshasana makes you find your centre and grow tall through the standing leg. Rest the foot on the ankle, calf or inner thigh, never on the knee.

    4. Cobra Pose: open the chest

Bhujangasana reverses the forward curl of sitting. Lift with the back muscles, elbows bent, shoulders away from the ears.

    5. Locust Pose: posture muscles

Salabhasana strengthens the back muscles that keep you upright all day. This is the most useful pose on the list for posture.

6 and 7. Cat and Cow: spinal mobility

Cat and Cow keep every part of the spine moving, especially the stiff upper back.

    8. Bridge Pose: hips and glutes

Setu Bandhasana opens the front of the hips, which tighten from sitting and tilt the pelvis forward.

Ujjayi breathing during the poses helps you lift the chest and lengthen the spine from the inside.

Can you gain height by stretching?

No, not permanently. Stretches for height growth, hanging from a bar, leg stretching for height or neck stretching for height increase can make you feel longer for a short time because the discs and soft tissue decompress, but you return to your normal height within hours. No stretch lengthens bone. Be wary of anyone who promises results, and never let anyone pull on a child's neck or legs. Also be sceptical of pills, capsules and "height increase in one day" programmes: they do not work and some are unsafe.

Stretching the spine for height is useful for one thing: posture. Stretches to get taller are really stretches to stand straighter, and that is a fine goal.

Exercises to increase height: what they really do

What are the exercises to increase height, and do they work? Lists of "top 10 exercises to increase height" usually include hanging, jumping, swimming, skipping, cobra and toe-touch stretches. For a growing child, these activities are healthy and support strong bones, but no exercise for height increase can override genes. For an adult, every exercise to increase height is really a posture or fitness exercise. The same is true of Pilates to increase height: it builds core strength and posture, not bone length.

So which are the best exercises to increase height in the honest sense? The best yoga exercise for height increase is the one that fixes your personal slouch: Locust and Cobra for a rounded back, Mountain Pose at the wall for a forward head, Bridge for tight hips. These yoga asanas to increase height are also good for strength: does yoga build strength? Yes, the back, glutes and legs work hard in these poses, and yoga increases flexibility by gently lengthening muscles over weeks of practice.

A height increase exercise for girls is the same as for boys. Girls usually finish growing a little earlier, so good sleep and nutrition in the years around puberty matter most. Men who hope for a height increase naturally in adulthood will gain nothing in bone length, but standing straight still changes how tall they look. Growth hormone (HGH) is released during deep sleep and exercise; the natural way to support it in children is a regular bedtime and daily active play, never supplements without a doctor.

Height badhane ke liye kya karen: tips, diet and exercise

Many readers ask "height badhane ke liye kya karen" and "height badhane ke liye kya khaye". The honest height badhane ke liye tips are the same ones above: for children, enough sleep, a balanced height badhane ke liye diet with milk, dal, eggs, paneer, green vegetables and fruit, and plenty of outdoor play. Height badhane ke liye exercise is fine as part of that play. Skip any height badhane ke liye capsule and unproven gharelu upay or Ayurvedic nuskhe that promise growth.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can yoga make you taller?

Yoga cannot lengthen your bones. It can improve your posture so you stand at your full height, which may make you look a little taller if you usually slouch.

Does yoga increase height after 18?

No new growth happens once the growth plates close, which for most people is between the mid-teens and early twenties. After that yoga helps only through better posture.

Which yoga is good for increasing height in children?

Any regular, playful yoga with standing poses, backbends and balance is fine for children. Their growth depends much more on sleep, nutrition and general activity than on specific poses.

Can you gain height by stretching?

Only for a few hours. Stretching decompresses the discs slightly, but you return to your usual height. It does not lengthen bones.

    What decides a person’s height?

Mostly genes. Nutrition, sleep and health during childhood and puberty decide whether a person reaches their genetic potential.

Do height increase pills or capsules work?

No reliable evidence shows they work in healthy people, and some may be unsafe. Talk to a doctor instead if you are worried about a child’s growth.

How long until I see better posture from yoga?

Many people feel more upright within a few weeks of regular practice. Visible posture changes usually take a few months of practising four or five times a week.

Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
