Surabhi Mudra: the cow gesture of patience

Four pairs of fingertips cross between your hands to make the shape of a cow’s udder. Surabhi mudra, also called Dhenu or Kamdhenu mudra, is a fiddly but calming gesture for patience and concentration.

  • Used forPatience, concentration; traditionally used for joints
  • Hold5–15 min
  • Best withSlow breathing

Also called: dhenu mudra, kamdhenu mudra.

How to do Surabhi Mudra

  1. Sit upright and bring your hands in front of your belly, palms facing you and fingers pointing toward each other.
  2. Touch the tip of your right index finger to the tip of your left middle finger, and the tip of your left index finger to the tip of your right middle finger.
  3. Touch the tip of your right ring finger to the tip of your left little finger, and the tip of your left ring finger to the tip of your right little finger.
  4. Let the thumbs relax apart. Turn the joined fingers down or forward, whichever is more comfortable.
  5. Rest the forearms on your thighs or a cushion and breathe slowly for 5–15 minutes, then release and shake out the hands.

Traditional benefits

  • Traditionally used for patience and concentration: the fiddly shape keeps the mind on the hands
  • Traditionally used for stiff joints and rheumatic aches in mudra books
  • Traditionally used as a symbol of abundance, after Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow
  • Traditionally used to balance all five elements, since every finger joins another

Keep in mind

  • Mudras do not treat arthritis or back pain. Keep your medicine and see a doctor or physiotherapist for joint or back problems.
  • Never force stiff fingers into place. If the shape hurts, touch only the easier pairs or choose a simpler mudra.
  • If your hands get tired, rest the forearms on a cushion or take short breaks.

Surabhi mudra is a two-hand gesture in which four pairs of fingertips cross between the hands, making a shape like a cow’s udder. It is also known as Dhenu mudra or Kamdhenu mudra. Mudra books use it for patience, concentration and, traditionally, for stiff joints. Here are the Surabhi mudra benefits, its meaning and clear, step by step instructions.

Surabhi mudra meaning: what is the meaning of Surabhi?

Surabhi is the name of the divine cow of Hindu stories, also called Kamadhenu, who grants every wish. The word itself means "fragrant" or "pleasing". Dhenu simply means cow. So the Surabhi mudra meaning is "cow gesture", and the joined fingers pointing down look like an udder full of milk: a picture of nourishment and plenty.

In Sanskrit the word mudra means seal or gesture. Indian mudras hand gestures appear in yoga, dance and temple art, and the study of mudras hand gestures and meaning is a whole tradition. Surabhi is one of the more complex ones.

Surabhi mudra step by step

The steps above and the Surabhi mudra image at the top of this page show the crossing pattern. If you see crossed fingertips pointing down and wonder which mudra is this, it is Surabhi. It looks hard in Surabhi mudra images, but it is easier with a method:

  1. Index and middle first. Cross these two pairs: each index fingertip meets the other hand’s middle fingertip.
  2. Then ring and little. Each ring fingertip meets the other hand’s little fingertip.
  3. Thumbs free. The thumbs do not take part; let them rest apart.

Expect to fumble the first few times. That is part of the practice: the concentration it demands quiets other thoughts. Hold it for 5–15 minutes, once or twice a day, and use the meditation timer so you do not watch the clock.

Surabhi mudra benefits (Surabhi mudra ke fayde)

  • Patience and concentration. The complex shape keeps you present. For more, see yoga for memory and concentration.
  • Joints. Mudra books list it for rheumatic pain and stiff joints. There is no research on that, but gentle finger movement does keep hands mobile. See yoga for arthritis.
  • Calm. Like any slow, seated practice, it can serve as a mudra to reduce stress; see yoga for stress relief.

You may read about the health benefits of Surabhi mudra for back pain, lower back pain or weight loss. These are traditional claims, not proven ones. For a real plan, read yoga for back pain; no gesture is a mudra for weight loss, including any weight loss mudra for ladies.

Surabhi mudra for manifestation

Because Kamadhenu grants wishes, some people use Surabhi mudra for manifestation: holding the gesture while picturing a goal. That is a symbolic practice. If it helps you get clear about what you want and take the next practical step, it is useful.

Surabhi mudra chakra link

Mudra books do not agree on one chakra for it. Because every finger (and so every element) meets another, some teachers see it as balancing all the chakras. Read more about mudras hand gestures for chakras on our chakras page.

Surabhi mudra side effects

No harmful side effects are known. The main issue is finger strain, especially with arthritis. If the full shape hurts, join only the index and middle pairs. Variants called Jal Surabhi or Surabhi Seer appear in some books, but Jal Surabhi mudra benefits and Surabhi Seer mudra benefits are not well documented, so start with the classic form.

What is a mudra? A gesture that gives attention a shape. How to practice mudras: sit well, breathe slowly, keep the fingers soft. There is no one mudra for all problems or best mudra for overall health, and mudras in yoga and their benefits differ. The Gyan mudra hand gesture is simpler, and the benefits of Gyan mudra are focus and calm. How to do Prana mudra: ring and little fingertips to the thumb. Surya mudra is used for balanced metabolism, the benefits of Vayu mudra relate to gas, the benefits of Kubera mudra to goals and the benefits of Yoni mudra to inward calm. Apana Vayu is the traditional mudra for heart health, and Mahasirs the mudra to reduce headache.

Two more with animal or earth names: how to do the touching the earth mudra (Bhumisparsha) is to rest the right fingertips on the ground, and Ashwini mudra, the "horse gesture", is not a hand gesture at all but a pelvic floor exercise; the benefits of Ashwini mudra relate to that area. See all hand mudras and their benefits on our mudras chart.

Surabhi mudra benefits in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada are the same as in English; the box below sums them up in Hindi.
