- Traditionally used to calm nerves and quieten the mind
- Traditionally paired with chanting "Om" to deepen concentration

Shankh mudra benefits are traditionally linked to the voice and a calm mind: the hands form the shape of a conch shell, the sacred horn blown in Indian temples. You wrap one hand around the other thumb, hold the gesture in front of your chest and breathe or chant quietly. Below you will learn its meaning, how to do it step by step, how long to hold it and what the evidence says.
What is Shankh mudra? Meaning and symbolism
Shankh (Sanskrit shankha) means "conch shell", so the Shankh mudra meaning in English is simply "conch shell gesture". If someone asks Shankh mudra kya hai, it is the hand position that copies this shell. If you saw two hands clasped like a shell with one thumb peeking out and wondered which mudra is this, you have found it.
What does a conch shell symbolize? In Hindu tradition the conch is held by Vishnu, and its sound marks the start of prayers, weddings and festivals. The symbolism of the conch shell is purity, a fresh start and the sacred sound "Om". What does a conch shell sound like? A deep, long, horn-like note. The conch shell horn sound is made by buzzing the lips into the open tip, the same way you play a trumpet; that is how to play a conch shell. The mudra borrows this idea of a clear, strong sound, which is why it is used for the voice.
How to do Shankh mudra step by step (Shankh mudra kaise karte hain)
The Shankh mudra steps above describe the classic form. Some tips:
- Soft grip. The right fingers hug the left thumb; they do not squeeze.
- Hands at the breastbone. Rest the lower edge of the hands lightly against the chest, or let the forearms rest on your lap if your shoulders tire.
- Swap sides. Hold it for the same time with the left hand wrapped around the right thumb.
- Sit well. An upright spine keeps the throat open. Any comfortable seat works.
Most Shankh mudra images show the hands from the front, where the joined fingers and the tip of the thumb look like the spiral of a shell. Shankh mudra kaisi hoti hai? Look at the diagram above.
How to do Sahaj Shankh mudra
Sahaj ("easy") Shankh mudra is a simpler version usually described like this: press the palms together, interlace the fingers, and lay both thumbs side by side on top. Hold it in your lap or in front of the belly. Sahaj Shankh mudra benefits are described in the same way: calm and support for the voice.
How long should I do Shankh mudra?
Hold it for 5–15 minutes on each side, once or twice a day, or before you speak, sing or teach. It combines well with sound: chant "Om" slowly in Udgeeth, or hum on the out-breath in Bhramari. You can also simply breathe slowly with a long out-breath. Set the meditation timer so the bell tells you when to swap hands. Poses that open the throat, such as Fish pose and Lion pose, make a good warm-up.
Benefits of Shankh mudra (Shankh mudra ke fayde aur labh)
Traditional books describe support for the throat and voice, calmer nerves, better concentration and a link to the throat chakra. Some also mention digestion. The honest view: no clinical studies have tested this mudra. The calm you feel comes from the slow breathing and humming that go with it, and humming breath such as Bhramari is a gentle way to relax.

Shankh mudra benefits for female and male practitioners
The technique and effects are the same for everyone. Teachers, singers and people who speak for a living often like it before a talk.
Shankh mudra side effects
There are no known side effects. If your hands ache, loosen the grip. It suits all ages and is fine during pregnancy.
