How to do Uttarabodhi Mudra
- Sit upright on a cushion or chair and bring your hands together in front of your chest or upper belly.
- Interlace your fingers, so the fingers of each hand rest between the fingers of the other.
- Release both index fingers from the clasp and straighten them so they point up, with the pads pressed together.
- Release both thumbs, straighten them and let the tips touch, pointing down toward your navel.
- Keep your elbows soft and away from your sides, and breathe slowly and deeply for a few minutes.
- Hold for 5–15 minutes, then release the fingers, shake out your hands and rest them on your thighs.

- Keep the interlaced grip loose if your finger joints are stiff or painful.
Uttarabodhi mudra is a two-hand gesture in which the fingers are interlaced, the index fingers point up with their pads touching, and the thumbs point down with their tips touching. The hands are held in front of the chest or upper belly, making a tall, narrow shape like a spire. It is traditionally used to build confidence and a clear, bright mind.
Uttarabodhi mudra meaning and pronunciation
In Sanskrit uttara means highest or supreme and bodhi means awakening or enlightenment. So the meaning is "gesture of supreme enlightenment". Uttarabodhi mudra pronunciation: "OOT-tuh-ruh BOH-dee MOO-druh". In Hindi, uttarabodhi mudra is written उत्तरबोधि मुद्रा, and in Tamil உத்தரபோதி முத்திரை.
Origin: a Buddhist gesture
Mudra books place the uttarabodhi mudra origin in Buddhism and link it with the Buddha, and the name uses the Buddhist word bodhi. It is much less common in art than the classic mudras of the Buddha, such as the raised palm of Abhaya mudra or the resting hands of Dhyana mudra. Its exact origin and early history are not well documented, so be careful with sources that give confident dates or stories.
What is a mudra in Buddhism? A symbolic gesture that shows a quality of mind or a moment in the Buddha's life. What is a mudra in yoga? A gesture or seal used with breathing and meditation. Uttarabodhi sits between the two: it has a Buddhist name, but today it is mostly practised in yoga classes.
Uttarabodhi mudra: how to do it
The steps above give the full method, and the diagram above is a clearer image of uttarabodhi mudra than most images online. Some details:
- Index fingers: pads together, pointing straight up. They should feel like one spire, not two fingers pushing against each other.
- Thumbs: tips touching and pointing down toward the navel. This forms a long, narrow diamond with the index fingers.
- Height: at the solar plexus is traditional, just below the breastbone. You can raise it to the chest for a more uplifting feel.
- Breath: slow, full breaths. Some teachers suggest breathing out a little more strongly, as if letting go of doubt.
Uttarabodhi mudra pointing down
In a common variation, you lower the hands into your lap and point the index fingers down toward the floor, with the thumbs pointing toward your belly. It is easier on the shoulders and is often used lying down or in long sits. Both versions are traditional; choose the one you can hold with ease.
Uttarabodhi mudra benefits
The traditional benefits are confidence, fresh energy and a clear head. People often use it before an exam, a job interview or a hard decision. It is described as a mudra for an energy boost when you feel flat, and for settling a mind that jumps from thought to thought.
What about uttarabodhi mudra health benefits? There is no clinical research on this gesture. The honest view: a few minutes of upright posture, slow breathing and a clear intention can help you feel steadier. No mudra for a thyroid problem or other illness has evidence behind it; for real support see yoga for thyroid and follow your doctor. Before a test, pair it with our yoga for exam stress plan, or see yoga for self-confidence.
Uttarabodhi mudra chakra and mantra
Most teachers link the gesture with the solar plexus chakra (Manipura), the centre of will and personal power, because the hands are held there. Our guide to the 7 chakras explains it. There is no single fixed uttarabodhi mudra mantra; some teachers chant Om, others use a short phrase such as "I am ready".
Uttarabodhi mudra side effects
No harmful side effects are known. Your shoulders or fingers may tire. Uttarabodhi mudra ke fayde, its benefits in Hindi and English books alike, are described as confidence and clarity, not a cure.
Uttarabodhi mudra vs yoni mudra and other gestures
If you see a picture of joined hands and wonder which mudra is this, look at which fingers touch and which way they point:
| Mudra | Index fingers | Thumbs |
|---|---|---|
| Uttarabodhi | Touch, point up | Touch, point down |
| Yoni mudra | Touch, point down or forward | Touch, point up |
| Kalesvara mudra | Bent, back to back | Point to the chest; middle fingertips touch |
The benefits of yoni mudra are described as inward calm, while kalesvara mudra benefits are described as calming anger and restlessness. How to do kalesvara mudra: middle fingertips touch, the index fingers bend back to back and the thumbs point to the chest. Photos of speakers and celebrities pressing their fingertips together (the "steeple" in body language) are sometimes labelled uttarabodhi mudra online, but that is a different gesture.
Mudras in yoga and their benefits differ. The benefits of Gyan mudra are focus; the benefits of Prithvi mudra (prithvi mudra benefits in Tamil books too) are steadiness; kubera mudra benefits in Tamil and Telugu, or kuber mudra benefits in Hindi, centre on reaching a goal; vayu mudra benefits in Hindi and Tamil are relief from gas. Abhaya hridaya mudra benefits are described as courage. Books on mudras for healing and transformation often promise more, but no gesture is a medicine. Each mudra and its benefits have their own focus; there is no best mudra for overall health. How to do Vayu mudra, Pushan mudra and the rest are on our mudras page, with all hand mudras and their benefits.

Hold it for 5–15 minutes. Even two or three minutes before an exam or meeting can help you feel settled.
