More poses that help with male fertility

Add these once the session above feels easy, or swap one in when a pose does not suit you.

    Mudras for male fertility

Hold a mudra while you sit for the breathing practice or a few minutes of quiet. Mudras are a traditional practice; research on them is limited.

    Avoid

Hot yoga and long hot baths, which heat the testes. Get a semen test if trying for over a year.

Emerging evidence: Small or early trials look promising.

Yoga for male fertility works best when you see it as part of a sperm-friendly lifestyle: less stress, more movement, better sleep, a healthy weight and keeping the testes cool. Small studies suggest yoga and meditation may improve sperm quality markers, but the evidence is still emerging. This page explains how sperm are affected by daily life, why each pose is in the session, what the research shows, and when to get a semen test.

Male infertility: what matters for sperm

In about half of couples who struggle to conceive, a male factor plays a part. Sperm take roughly two to three months to form, so anything that affects them (heat, smoking, alcohol, illness, stress, weight) shows up in a semen test months later. That is also why any change, including yoga for sperm count, needs about three months before you can judge it.

The main things a semen analysis looks at are count (how many), motility (how well they swim) and morphology (their shape). Some clinics also test sperm DNA fragmentation, which rises with oxidative stress.

Can yoga improve sperm count? What studies show

A few studies from India have looked at yoga for male infertility. In a 2018 study, 30 male partners of couples with recurrent pregnancy loss followed a 21-day yoga and meditation programme; the researchers reported lower oxidative stress markers, less sperm DNA fragmentation and better sperm count and motility. Another study from the same group, in fathers of children with a childhood eye cancer, found that months of yoga and meditation lowered markers of oxidative DNA damage in sperm.

These results are encouraging, but the studies were small, often without a proper control group, and came from one research team. So can yoga improve sperm count? For male fertility issues, yoga may help some men, most likely by lowering stress and oxidative stress, but it has not been proven to treat male infertility. Our site rates the evidence as emerging.

Yoga poses for male fertility in the session

The guided session uses eight yoga poses for men's fertility. They open the hips and groin, strengthen the back and buttocks, and finish with rest. None of them needs flexibility, which makes this good yoga for the inflexible male.

Bound angle or butterfly pose (Baddha Konasana)

Bound angle is often called butterfly. Butterfly yoga benefits for male fertility are often exaggerated online; what it really does is gently open the inner thighs and groin and encourage relaxed breathing. Sit on a folded blanket, and let your knees drop without pushing them.

    Garland pose (Malasana)

Garland pose is a deep squat that stretches the hips and pelvic floor. Sit on a block if your heels lift or your knees complain.

    Bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana)

Bridge strengthens the buttocks and back of the legs and opens the front of the hips, which get tight from long sitting.

Cobra, bow and locust (Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Salabhasana)

These three backbends strengthen the spine and open the chest. Cobra is the gentle start, locust builds back strength, and bow pose is the strongest. Skip bow if you have back pain, high blood pressure or a hernia, and do half bow (one leg at a time) instead.

Easy pose and corpse pose (Sukhasana, Savasana)

Easy pose is the seat for breathing, and Savasana is where the stress-lowering part of the practice happens. Do not skip the rest at the end.

Which are the best yoga poses for male fertility? There is no single "fertility pose" for boosting male fertility. The best yoga for male fertility is a regular, balanced practice you enjoy, three to five times a week.

Yoga, stress and men's reproductive health

Trying to conceive is stressful, especially after months without success or during IVF. Long-term stress can affect sleep, sex drive and hormones. Yoga for men's reproductive health mainly helps here: slow breathing and rest shift the nervous system towards "rest and digest".

Use these breathing exercises for male fertility and calm:

    • Nadi Shodhana: slow alternate-nostril breathing for 5–10 minutes. Skip breath holds if you have high blood pressure.
    • Bhramari: humming bee breath, 5–7 rounds, before sleep.
    • Yoga Nidra: 10–20 minutes of guided rest on stressful days.

The session also suggests Linga mudra. Any yoga mudra for male fertility is traditionally used for focus and warmth; there is no evidence that it changes sperm, so treat it as a calm hand position for breathing.

Is hot yoga bad for male fertility?

It may be. Sperm production needs the testes to be a few degrees cooler than the body. Regular heat exposure (hot tubs, saunas, long hot baths, laptops on the lap) is linked to lower sperm quality. For men trying to conceive, it is sensible to skip hot yoga and heated studios and practise in a normal room instead. Wear loose, breathable clothing during and after practice.

Lifestyle for male fertility: what matters more than any pose

    HabitWhy it matters
Stop smoking and vapingSmoking is linked to lower sperm count and more DNA damage
Keep alcohol lowHeavy drinking lowers testosterone and sperm quality
Aim for a healthy weightObesity is linked to lower sperm quality and hormone changes
Keep the testes coolAvoid hot yoga, saunas, hot tubs and laptops on the lap
Move regularlyModerate exercise and yoga help weight, mood and sleep
Sleep 7–9 hoursPoor sleep is linked to lower testosterone
Check medicines and supplementsAnabolic steroids and testosterone supplements can stop sperm production

If you are doing yoga for testosterone, note that exercise and healthy weight support normal levels, but no yoga pose raises testosterone on its own.

A 12-week yoga plan for men trying to conceive

    • 3–4 days a week: the guided session on this page (about 15–20 minutes).
    • Most days: 5–10 minutes of Nadi Shodhana or Bhramari, and a 30-minute walk.
    • Twice a week: strength work; our guided sessions include Core Strength and Weight Loss Power Flow.
    • Weekly: Yoga Nidra and one practice together with your partner. Yoga for couples trying to conceive can make the process feel more shared; see yoga for fertility for her side of the plan.

Beginners can start with our yoga for beginners guide. Track your sessions in the practice log: 12 weeks matches one full sperm cycle.

Is yoga good for men? Why go yoga as a man

The benefits of yoga for men go beyond fertility: better mobility for stiff hips and hamstrings, a stronger back, better balance, less stress and better sleep. Yoga fitness for men does not require flexibility; you get flexible by practising, not before. Many men also find yoga pairs well with running, lifting or sport.

Yoga for male fertility side effects and when to see a doctor

Yoga for male fertility has few side effects if you avoid overheating and do not force deep hip or back poses. Strong backbends like bow pose can strain the back; knees can object in garland pose.

Yoga after a vasectomy will not restore fertility. Yoga for sperm count after vasectomy is not possible; only a reversal or sperm retrieval can. A varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum) is a medical issue a urologist should assess, and yoga for varicocele is not a treatment.

See a doctor if you and your partner have been trying for a year (six months if she is over 35), or earlier if you have had testicular problems, surgery, cancer treatment, erection or ejaculation problems, or a lump, pain or swelling in the testes. A simple semen analysis is the first step; many causes of male infertility are treatable.

Start the plan. Open the guided 3D session above in a cool room. The voice leads each pose, and the ring on the mat helps you slow your breath.

    Research behind this plan

    1. Dhawan 2018, Indian Journal of Medical Research — 30 male partners in a 21-day yoga and meditation programme: lower oxidative stress and sperm DNA fragmentation, better sperm count and motility (no control group)
    2. Dada 2016, Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention — yoga and meditation over 3–6 months lowered markers of oxidative DNA damage in sperm

    Frequently asked questions

    Can yoga increase sperm count?

It may help. Small studies from India found yoga and meditation lowered oxidative stress and improved sperm markers, including count and motility, but the evidence is still limited. Combine yoga with a healthy lifestyle and give it about three months.

What are the best yoga poses for male fertility?

Bound angle (butterfly), garland pose, bridge, cobra, locust, bow pose, easy pose and Savasana, with slow breathing. Regular practice matters more than any single pose.

Is hot yoga bad for male fertility?

It may be. Heat can lower sperm quality, so men trying to conceive should avoid hot yoga, saunas and hot tubs and practise in a normal room.

How long does it take yoga to improve sperm?

Sperm take about 2–3 months to form, so give any change at least three months before a repeat semen test.

Does any yoga mudra help male fertility?

Linga mudra is traditionally used for warmth and focus, but there is no evidence that any mudra changes sperm. Use it as a calm hand position during breathing.

    Can yoga treat male infertility?

No. Yoga can support fertility through lower stress and a healthier lifestyle, but infertility needs a medical assessment, starting with a semen analysis.

Is yoga good for men who are not flexible?

Yes. You do not need flexibility to start. Use blankets and blocks, keep poses small, and flexibility will come with practice.

Medical note: yoga supports treatment; it does not replace it. Keep taking prescribed medicine and talk to your doctor before you start, especially with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, pregnancy, epilepsy or severe pain. Read our medical disclaimer.
